PR Intern talks all about her wonderful first week getting hands on for an Award Winning Scottish PR Agency

By Georgie Hardie

HAVING just finished my first year of university studying Mass Communications with Public Relations I thought what better a time to try my hand at an internship?

After just one week I feel I have already gained a much greater insight into the exciting world of PR.

Initially being nervous as I walked in for my first day I was soon put as ease by the friendly and welcoming team. I was offered a coffee, shown to my desk and set to work with a mixture of tasks.

This began with the morning routine of the newspaper sweep. I soon learnt Holyrood PR has a real range of clients.

Throughout my first week I have helped with composing tweets for companies’ social medias. This ranged from companies such as Dermal Beauty Clinic to Eagle Couriers. Coming up with eye-catching one liners proved difficult at times but allows you to show your creative side.

The team makes you feel very involved with what’s going on, such as being involved in meetings and brainstorming sessions for projects such as helping to launch a Scottish castle as a wedding venue.

Lending a hand to press releases, media montages, uploading coverage to the website and getting to grips with photoshop certainly keeps you on your toes.

I’m currently in the midst of building up contacts for Scottish bridal company magazines. Being a big fan of the TV show Say Yes to the Dress I was happy to say yes to this task.

The world of PR is definitely fast paced and dynamic with lots to offer. I’m still finding my feet and getting to grips with terms such as SEO titles and how to navigate the ins and outs of uploading to a website.

However, thankfully the team are very patient and happy to help when you need a hand.

My first week is already over and I’m on to my next, eager to learn more. With a day trip coming up this Friday to Glasgow to meet a 95-year-old painter who apparently can bake cakes like Mary Berry I must say I’m looking forward to it.
