From Public House to Public Relations: My Whirlwind First Week in PR

BlogIntern Programme

After graduation, Holyrood PR were there to welcome me into the world of PR

By Alice Hope

For many, life after university can be difficult to adapt to. Before joining Holyrood PR, I was part of this many, but now I see it is not so scary.

After graduating in Edinburgh, I found myself at home, working around the clock pulling pints and waiting tables in my two hospitality jobs at home – a far cry from the work I find myself doing here now.

Having studied social anthropology at university, Holyrood PR was going to supply me with my first ever taste of the world of PR. And so far, it has not disappointed.

If the first week of my month here is anything to go by, I can almost guarantee that for the rest of my time I will certainly be kept busy. So far, I have already gained invaluable experience that I will be able to take with me throughout my career.

From day one, you are not treated like an intern at Holyrood. The responsibility they hand you is incredible.

I never once thought that, on my very first day in the job, I would be tasked with drafting a press release for one of their biggest clients. Yet, there I was. With that, my first day fears of twiddling my thumbs at my desk flew out the window.

The team at Holyrood are entirely committed to making the most of my time and are always coming up with new and exciting things for me to try my hand at. From writing press releases, blogs and social media posts to working with software such as WordPress, Photoshop and Canva, I’ve already learnt a great deal during my week.

Due to Holyrood’s vast array of clients, no two tasks are the same. There is so much creativity at play when it comes to writing for their different clients, which is incredibly rewarding as a former student of a very essay-based subject.

I left university with a degree in a subject I loved – yet its career paths were rather ambiguous. So, my goal has been to find internships that give me the perfect taste of the PR industry. Holyrood PR has so far provided me with the perfect insight into life in the sector and has definitely cemented the industry in my career plans.

My first week at Holyrood has absolutely flown by. Knowing all that I’ve experienced in one week, I can’t wait to see what is in store for the rest of the month.
