MAKING MOVES WITH THE GENERATION PROJECT

HOW LOCAL SCHOOL PUPILS ARE BRIDGING THE GAP AND MAKING MOVES WITH PENSIONERS AT ROBERTSON COURT

PENSIONERS at the Bield retirement housing development in Stenhousemuir have been keeping fit and active with the help of local Larbert High pupils. The classes take place every Monday in the main lounge of the retirement home and the activities range from dancing to bowling.

The ‘Generation Project’ is an initiative run by the Tryst Community Sports Club and works to bridge the gap between younger and older members of the community through exercise.

As well as helping the residents stay active, the initiative also brings a social element both with the residents and pupils with ice breaker games throughout the sessions and time to chat before and after which, according to Greg Nicol, Head of Sports at Larbert has had great success since the beginning of the program.

Research suggests that intergenerational activities can be mutually beneficial to both young and elderly people, with studies showing improved emotional and social wellbeing.
Isobel, a resident at the retirement home and participant in The Generation Project said: “It’s great to see some of the younger people taking the time out of their day to make a real difference in our community. The Generation project makes such a difference to our Monday morning and we would really miss it if we didn’t have it.”
