Marketing boss Victoria McCusker has scored a filling victory after being crowned winner of Hellmann’s Sandwich of the Century competition.
The competition, set up to celebrate 100 years of Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, saw more than 2,200 hopefuls submit entries for the best sarnie after the competition was promoted in a national TV advertising campaign fronted by TV comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer.
Victoria’s prize winning sandwich, named the ‘Boredom Buster’, was made using multi-seed bread, avocado, stilton, smoked bacon, roast chicken and Hellmann’s Mayonnaise.
Victoria, who works for Perth based Land and Property Management specialists Bell Ingram, said her sandwich was inspired from the need to inject a bit of variety into the family’s packed lunches while making the most of any leftovers.
She said: “One of our favourite meals is chicken stuffed with stilton and wrapped in bacon. One day we found we had leftovers which I decided to pop into a sandwich the next day.
“I then added slices of avocado to help freshen up the sandwich, topped with a dollop of Hellmann’s Mayonnaise.
“The sandwich was such a hit that I now have to make extra portions of the dinner dish to make sure there is enough left for the following day’s lunches.
“My only worry now is that that I’m going to have to get up earlier to make the sandwiches for the family as, up until now, that has always been my husband’s job!”
Victoria’s entry was first placed into the top 40 by a public vote before a panel of judges from Hellmann’s decided she should travel to the BBC’s Good Food Show in London as one of the eight finalists.
The finalists’ sandwiches were prepared on stage at the BBC Good Food Show by celebrity chef Marcus Bean, who, along with the Hellmann’s team, decided that Victoria’s ‘Boredom Buster’ was the unanimous winner.
By scooping first prize, Victoria bagged a two-day VIP trip to London with her husband and a luxurious Hellmann’s hamper, as well as having her sandwich feature on BBC’s Good Food channel.
Victoria, who lives in Bridge of Allan, said: “I suppose you could say that it is a real ‘fill’ to be crowned Sandwich of the Century winner.
“I thought a sandwich competition was a really fun way to try to be more imaginative with my family’s packed lunches, but I never thought for a second that I’d beat more than 2000 other people to win the competition.”
Victoria is looking to show off her winning sandwich at this year’s Royal Highland Show when she will cook the ingredients on the Aga at the trade stand shared by Bell Ingram and Aga’s Perth and Edinburgh stores.
