Two and half tonnes is a big chunk of stuff.

It’s about the same weight as a fully-grown giraffe and around 1.5 times as heavy as the average family car.

It also happens to be the amount of paper we recycle every year, here at Holyrood PR.

In fact, we were so keen to find out what 2.5 tonnes of paper looks like that we asked our pals at Changeworks – who handle all of our recycling – if they’d let us see for ourselves.

This photograph, taken at their Edinburgh plant, shows baled stacks of paper, each weighing half a tonne. Which means we recycle five of these every year.

Despite that, we’re no nearer to achieving the mythical “paperless office” status.

But we’re pretty proud that all of the newspapers, magazines, brochures, letters and printouts that cross our desk end up in a good place.

Even though it’s been years since we started disposing of our paper in an environmentally-friendly way, we got to thinking about it afresh when the new Scottish Government recycling rules for businesses came in during January 2014.

We’ve been delighted to get even more involved in recycling our rubbish, so those fine folks at Changeworks are now collecting a lot more bags from our offices.

All of which simply backs up all of the other good work we’ve been doing to reduce our carbon footprint.
