PENCIL VS REALITY…WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE?

You have often heard about art imitating life, but an artist has taken the saying to a whole new level with an incredible collection of drawings that reveal a masterful eye for illusion.
Reality meets fantasy in this amazing series of drawings which are to be exhibited at art shows in London next month.
Using expertly-drawn sketches, Belgian artist Ben Heine blends pencil, photography, imagination and reality – and the results are truly astonishing.

IS THIS A POST BOX – OR A POO BOX? (Scott)

As a responsible dog walker, I can often be found bagging up dog turds and putting them in the nearest bin.
Spare a thought for poor old Alf Spence, 91, who mistook his local dog waste bin for a post box – and spent two years dropping his letters into the crap-filled receptacle.
Just as well it wasn’t the other way round – or we’d be busy sympathising with an army of very, very annoyed posties.

TRIPPY TRIBUTE PARK (Aimee)

I’ve done deserted theme parks before but I was equally as intrigued by this theme park with a rather disturbing urban legend.  According to the rumour mill the park in Wilson, South Carolina, was a tribute to Vollis Simpson’s daughter who was driving home in the early hours after having a dose of LSD.  Obviously completely out of her tree she unfortunately crashed and died on the scene.  Devastated by her death, her father dreamt of what she saw the night before and he constructed a memorial on the site of her death with massive reflector-covered windmills.
I love these kinds of intriguing stories so when I discovered the truth I was just a little disappointed.  Although still a creation of Vollis Simpson, it isn’t a memorial but a public art area for drivers to enjoy.  He does have a daughter but there have been no acid infused trips.
The windmill-like structures are built with scrap parts from old cars and reflectors, with eight total in the park area. Since their creation, the whirligigs have achieved a certain notoriety, with four of them being installed in Atlanta for the 1996 Olympic games. Although entrance to the area is considered trespassing, many have reported that Mr. and Mrs. Simpson are gracious enough to show visitors around the park. Just don’t ask about Mr. Simpson’s alleged daughter and her harrowing experience with LSD.

NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH (Scott)

If you ever despair about modern civilisation, then this guide to some of the worst torture methods from the Middle Ages might make you think again.
So-called water boarding (practised by the CIA) is bad enough, but thankfully there aren’t many places carrying out torture, mutilation and murder as a public spectacle. Grotesque.

CAN YOU PULL OVER, I’M RUNNING FASTER THAN YOUR CAR (Pamela)

A 76 year old woman led police on a 27 mile long car chase at a speed of 10mph this month, until one impatient officer got out his car to run alongside the her vehicle and tap on her window to alert her to the fact that she was the one being pursued by the police.
Pensioner Caroline Turner was later told in court that she had been pulled over because her driving was unacceptable, to which she replied “There is nothing to discuss, I am going home”. The police officers who detained her overnight, because they feared that they couldn’t let her loose on the road again, gave a detailed description of what made them finally pull her over. It was reported that old Caroline managed to drive the wrong way around a roundabout, veer onto the opposite side of the road into oncoming traffic and then refuse to stop when police flashed their blue lights at her. She got a 12 month ban and a £100 fine. Poor woman. Maybe it’s time they force people to re-sit their driving test when they reach a certain age.
