AN EDINBURGH hotel that puts all profits back into training surgeons worldwide has heralded its strongest figures to date.
Ten Hill Place, the hotel operated by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), is celebrating posting a record turnover of £2.69m – thanks in part to an impressive 88 per cent occupancy rate.
Opened in 2006, the 77 room four-star hotel was originally intended to provide on-site accommodation for the college and its burgeoning conference hub – yet it is now a busy hotel all year long, benefiting from the Edinburgh’s busy festive and summer seasons.
Scott Mitchell, Director of RCSEd Commercial Enterprises, said: “The hotel provides a real personal alternative to the vast majority of big name city centre hotels and is run by a hugely dedicated team whose hard work has directly resulted in its most successful ever year.
“At its core, the hotel is a platform to generate profits that go directly into improving lives for surgical patients all around the world – even in areas of conflict and extreme poverty.
“We initially targeted visiting academics, medical professionals and delegates to conferences; however our customer base is now especially varied – even more so during festival season and hogmanay.”
The city centre setting has been able to establish its hospitality offerings with the No.10 Restaurant and 10 Wine Bar – operated in partnership with renowned capital caterers, Heritage Portfolio.
Scott added: “Integral to a good stay is the food and drink – and thanks to our unique partnership with Heritage Portfolio, whose team are completely integrated with our staff, the restaurant and wine bar has scored tremendous TripAdvisor reviews and are both successful on their own merit.”
The positive news for Ten Hill Place follows the success of the RCSEd as an Edinburgh Festival venue, achieving more than 75,000 ticket sales in a record year – up around 25 per cent on 2015.
The Royal College is one of the most august institutions in Scotland. It provides education and assessment for medical students, surgical trainees and consultants and supports research to advance standards of care for the future. Surgeons trained and assessed through the College take their life-saving and life-changing skills all over the world.
The college’s Commercial Enterprises promotes, sells and manages all commercial activities held within the College Campus, which include the four-star, 77-bedroom hotel, Ten Hill Place, Café 1505 and four events venues. All profits support the charitable aims of the College which are education, assessment and advancement in surgery.
