Time flies when you’re having fun: Learning PR in Edinburgh sees four weeks pass in a flash

Holyrood PR BlogIntern Programme

Graduate Lucy Donaldson reflects on her placement with Holyrood PR in Edinburgh

By Lucy Donaldson

NOW THAT my time is nearly up with Holyrood PR, I thought it best to do a bit of reflecting.

It feels like no time since I was wrestling with the remote desktop and trying to calm my first-day jitters. Four weeks on, and I feel like part of the team.

Throughout my internship, I’ve been challenged and supported in equal measures by the whole team, who are never too busy to lend a helping hand or answer any questions.

From the get-go, I was trusted with meaningful projects that have benefitted both clients and the wider business.

I’ve made Canva graphics and presentations, drafted social copy and blog posts, learned about SEO, conducted interviews, and drafted press releases for some of Holyrood PR’s most prominent clients.

A few highlights include one of my press releases for CALA Homes (East) being featured on the front page of the Scotsman and another in the Mail on Sunday.

I also re-wrote a release (written by a different agency) which flopped first time round. The updated release got featured in Insider.co.uk, The Edinburgh Reporter and Scottish Financial News, amongst others. It was great to be able to turn the story around and witness a positive outcome for our client.

Given that I didn’t specifically do a PR degree I was worried I’d be at a disadvantage. As it turns out, this absolutely wasn’t the case.

The team were so helpful in getting me clued up on anything I wasn’t sure of and explained every task in detail.

This internship has been an invaluable stepping stone in my professional career and has given me a renewed sense of confidence in my abilities.

So, no matter what your experience, if you fancy a career in PR, I can’t recommend this internship enough.

Thanks to everyone at HPR, it’s been a blast!
