LEARNING THE FUN WAY (Victoria)

On a recent trip to the Alps, I realised that my French left a lot to be desired and was left a little flummoxed on a few occasions.  It got me thinking that I really need to brush up on my language skills! After discussing this with a friend, she recommended a website called ‘Memrise’. ‘Memrise’ is a revolutionary online educational platform that uses mnemonics which are partly gathered through crowdsourcing to boost the speed and ease of learning. It was founded in 2009 by London based writer and entrepreneur Ed Cooke who is an official Grand Master of Memory and has spent years studying and researching memory techniques. The website offers over 200 languages to learn, along with more obscure subjects such as tropical fish, herbs and cheeses! It has literally blown my mind since I started using it – what an incredible resource that will be of great use to students and anyone with a desire to learn. Have a go!

FREEZE FRAME (Laura)

As a person who is camera shy I know what its like to freeze up when the video camera is out. But one woman working on a Florida TV Station has drawn attention to herself after freezing up and rather comically lowering herself to the ground when she realises she can be seen on screen behind the anchor woman. The video has been viewed over 1.3million times on YouTube drawing more attention to herself than she would have liked. Bet she wishes she’d just acted naturally now!

RELIGION COMES TO TWITTER (Gaynor)

A few weeks ago we were all talking about some odd people joining the twitter world for example media mogul Rupert Murdoch and fallen star Gary Glitter. Now it seems there is a new person to add to that list- Pope Benedict XVI. The pope is set to have his own personal twitter account after the Vatican’s plan to move towards new technology. Good old popey is trying to reach out to Catholics all over the world by sharing gospels and other news from the Vatican in just 140 characters. It’s likely that his twitter handle will be @BenedictusPPXVI- get following!

COOKING WITH POO (Lewis)

What would you think if you saw a cookbook with this title? Yes, my reaction to the title is the same as yours, what the …? However, the title of this book is not quite what you think that in Thailand the word poo means crab so the title of the book really means ‘Cooking with crab’. This title is looking to be in the running for the strangest book title of the year.
Aino Praakli’s book on socks is also shortlisted alongside The Great Singapore Penis Panic: And the Future of American Mass Hysteria by Scott D Mendelson.

RED CARPET GOWNS (Emma)

The Oscars are just as important for fashion as they are for film, and every year there is an equal amount of anticipation over who will wear what as there is over who will win what.  The awards ceremony was held in Hollywood last night and as expected, the dresses did not fail to impress.  Several celebrities opted for Elie Saab and Marchesa.  My personal favourites were Angelina Jolie who wore a black, full-length Versace dress with a thigh high split and Gwyneth Paltrow, who looked stunning in a white caped Tom Ford piece. Emma Stone looked lovely in a fuschia Giambattista Valli halterneck, as did Kelly Osbourne in an elegant Badgley Mischka gown.
