The Grass Is Greener for Teviotdale Bowling Club

Members of a Hawick bowling club are to replace their old surface with help of a generous grant of £5,500 awarded from the Banks Community Fund.
The bowling green at the Teviotdale Indoor Bowling Club has worn away over the years of use and the underlay had begun to disintegrate.
Now, thanks to the grant from the Banks Community Fund, the charitable fund set up by the Banks Group, the Hamilton-based property and renewable energy business, the club will be able to use the grant to relay the playing area, resulting in a better surface than ever before.
Club officials are delighted with the backing from Banks, which they say will benefit the entire community due to the bowling green being used as a hub for local schools, mothers and children and also those with disabilities and impairments.
Teviotdale Indoor Bowling Club Committee said: “Over time, materials start to wear and tear. The underlay we use was already second hand, but now it’s just unuseable.
“The grant will make a huge difference as it will allow us to invest in a brand new underlay.
“The Bowling Club has been open for almost 20 years now and is a real hub of the community. We run a club via the local schools called Super Bowl, we have hosted a Hawick music festival and the club is also used by the Heart and Stroke and Disability groups to host their meetings.
“There is a real sense of community spirit here and we are grateful to Banks for giving us the opportunity to make these much needed improvements.”
Banks Renewables, part of the Banks Group submitted proposals for its 15 turbine Birneyknowe Wind Farm between Hawick and Bonchester Bridge in the Scottish Borders and is currently awaiting planning determination from The Scottish Government’s Energy Consent and Deployment Unit and the Scottish Borders Council.
In addition to providing green energy, Banks Renewables strives to provide communities that host its wind farms with benefits that will make a meaningful, positive and lasting difference to the lives of those living closest to the sites – such as the support granted to Teviotdale Indoor Bowling Club.
If the plans are approved, a community fund would be set-up that could generate up to £300,000-a-year and could also deliver direct funding into local community groups and environmental projects.
During an intensive two year period of public consultation, local people said there were a number of local projects that would benefit from funding and said there was a void in employment and training opportunities in the area, which Banks Renewables hopes to address.
Miles Crossley, senior business development manager at Banks Renewables, said; “We’re delighted to help the bowling club with the grant to resurface their green. It’s very obvious that the club is not just for bowlers and it’s great to see that it is such a key hub for the community.
“We work with the local communities on all of our wind farm proposals. We want to create lasting improvements that are beneficial to locals in and around Hawick to provide them with a better quality of community life in addition to providing investment and jobs during the construction phase and, of course, with clean, green energy once it is built and in operation.”
Banks Renewables aims to improve access to jobs in the Hawick area by providing local people, without age restrictions, and local firms with a new fund to boost training and workplace learning opportunities.
During the construction of the wind farm, there will also be a variety of opportunities for local firms to tender for contracts ranging from construction and maintenance to hospitality.
