YOUNGSTERS IN EAST LOTHIAN ARE TO GET THE CHANCE-OF-A-LIFETIME MEETING AND POOL SESSION WITH SCOTS SWIM HERO DUNCAN SCOTT
The exclusive event has been planned as the ‘prize’ for enjoyleisure winning the Learn to Swim Service Provider of the Year 2019 – which was sponsored by Scottish Water – at Scottish Swimming’s annual Awards.
Scottish Swimming’s National Learn to Swim Framework is supported by Scottish Water and delivered by Leisure Trusts and aquatic providers across Scotland. enjoyleisure’s programme is already helping 2,300 kids in East Lothian to learn to swim.
Duncan Scott, Learn to Swim ambassador and winner of multiple medals at Olympics, Commonwealth Games and World Championships, will take part in a fun pool session at Musselburgh Sports Centre on February 5. As well as sharing swimming top-tips and giving swimming demonstrations to the children from across East Lothian, Duncan will also host a question and answer session.
Duncan became the most decorated swimmer ever at a Commonwealth Games after finishing Gold Coast 2018 with six medals to his name. He also holds the British record of 47.87sec for the 100m freestyle, won two silvers at his first Olympic Games in Rio and is the National Lottery Athlete of the Year.
Karen Ferguson, Swimming Development Manager at enjoyleisure said: “After launching the Learn to Swim programme in September 2017, we devised a strategy to create a quality teaching programme and an inclusive learning environment and the programme has just grown from there.
“We offer free lessons to draw youngsters into the programme that wouldn’t normally come along as it gives them the opportunity to see how beneficial it is. It’s amazing to see how the lessons are able to give children so much confidence.
“Getting the Learn to Swim programme to this point has been a real team effort from everyone involved, so we are really excited to be recognised for our dedication and rewarded with a visit from Duncan.”
enjoyleisure faced tough competition from other very successful Leisure Trusts and won Scottish Water’s Learn to Swim Provider of the Year over two other shortlisted providers: North Lanarkshire and Sport Aberdeen.
The award focuses on a number of areas including programme management, the quality of teaching environment, inclusion and communication with teachers, parents and participants.
enjoyleisure were also praised for their promotion of the swim school within the local community and innovative practice in the area of teacher development and recruitment.
The Learn to Swim Framework provides Leisure Trusts and aquatic providers around the country with a clear set of national standards, as well as a pathway which allows parents to follow their children’s progression. In the first three years of the partnership with Scottish Water, it is hoped 100,000 kids will have been given the chance to become confident swimmers.
Brian Lironi, Director of Corporate Affairs at Scottish Water, said: “We want to support a flourishing Scotland and the Learn to Swim programme is a shining example of that – encouraging children to be safe and confident in and around water at the same time as having fun.
“We are delighted for kids in East Lothian to get the chance to meet Duncan Scott, thanks to the great work enjoyleisure is doing.
“We hope Duncan’s visit will not only inspire them to continue to develop their swimming skills but that it will encourage others, especially children with disabilities, to join the wave and take part.”
