Elen (Nelly) Rabi, who has lived at Bupa’s Rutherglen Care Home since January 2012, says her secret recipe to a long and fulfilling life is a taste for all things sweet.
Nelly, who is well-known in the care home for her sweet tooth, celebrated her milestone birthday at Bupa’s Rutherglen Care Home, on Rodger Drive, with an afternoon party attended by residents, friends and her beloved brother Alec.
Born in 1910 in The Gorbals in Glasgow, Nelly began her working life as a cobbler, making and fixing shoes in her local community. Later in life, she worked as a shop keeper, a job that she loved as it involved talking to customers and was related to her true passion: shopping. Nelly loved to spend her wages and her days off in the local shops in Glasgow.
Nelly had a long and happy marriage to her husband Ernest. Although she and Ernest did not have children, Nelly – an avid animal lover- did, at one point, own three cats and three dogs.
Throughout her long life, Nelly has also been dedicated to her charity work. Being a prominent member of her local church community, she spent her spare time arranging charity events such as volunteer coffee mornings and church groups.
Her contribution was so meaningful that Nelly is still frequently visited in the care home by members of her church, including the Minister, Reverend Sarah Elizabeth McKay, who also attended Nelly’s birthday celebrations.
Nelly is best known at Rutherglen for her love of tasty treats. Her brother Alec, 89, still visits his sister often and is sure to bring packets of chocolates, sweets and puddings, which also always go down well with the other residents.
Ann Proven, Activity Coordinator at Bupa’s Rutherglen Care Home, said “Nelly is a charming resident to have with us at the care home. She is full of stories about her days as a shop keeper and all of the interesting people she used to meet working there.
“Everyone was absolutely delighted to help her celebrate her big day and it was lovely to have the Minister come along and join in with the festivities. Of course, Nelly was particularly excited about her cake.
“Turning 105 is such a fantastic achievement and we’re all so proud of Nelly.”
