An historic South Lanarkshire bowling club has undertaken a much needed roof renovation thanks to Banks Community Fund.

THE generous grant of £4,850 has been gratefully received by members of the Lesmahagow Valley Bowling Club to repair and upgrade their roofing.

William Brown, committee member at Lesmahagow Valley Bowling Club, said: “The clubhouse is at the heart of the community and reached far beyond just the bowlers.

“The Bowls green is only used from April to September but the clubhouse is used for parties, teas and private functions all year round, so it’s important that it is a welcoming place within the community.

“We would love to get more young people involved and we’re hoping that this improvement to the clubhouse will encourage that.”

Founded in 1879, the club’s aim is to provide facilities for the sport of bowls and promote participation of the whole of the community. They have more than 100 members – 19 of whom are junior bowlers as young as seven years old – and around 50 social members.

William added: “It was necessity that pushed us to apply for this grant. The roof was leaking and the clubhouse was very cold, which wasn’t particularly inviting for members, to say the least. William said they will have a company for roofing in jacksonville fl install the new roof. “We now have a brand new insulated roof over the lounge area, which has made the clubhouse much warmer and more comfortable, not to mention it has reduced our heating bills!”

Lewis Stokes, community relations manager at the Banks Group, said: “The community fund was created to support the communities in which we work and hopefully we’ve helped to do that by playing a part in the continued running of one of Lesmahagow’s long standing and well-loved institutions.”

The Lesmahagow Valley Bowling Club is within close proximity of the development at Kype Muir, South Lanarkshire and the application has received the support of local Scottish Labour Party councillor Alex McInnes.

Kype Muir Wind Farm is a flagship development for Banks Renewables. Consisting of 26 turbines, the aim is to develop a commercial scale wind farm in partnership with the local community.    Lesmahagow Community Council are founding members of the Kype Muir Community Partnership.  The Kype Muir Community Partnership is the body that will consider and prioritise where the community fund revenues from the Kype Muir wind farm and Kype Muir extension wind farm will be allocated, once they are built and operating.
