Residents at Bield’s St Andrews Court Care Home, which is designed for older people living with dementia, have played their part in recognising the third global World Alzheimer’s Month by undertaking a number of activities during September.

Events at the care home in Uphall, West Lothian, kicked off with a trip on the scenic Bo’ness to Kinneil rail line.

The outing along the 10-mile heritage railway, which runs alongside the Forth Estuary, was suggested by staff to allow residents to soak up the sights, smells and sounds of yesteryear.

The activities will continue later in September with an in-house concert at the home performed by ‘Music In Hospitals’, as well as having an evening trip to the ‘Older People Have Talent’ show at Broxburn Community Hall.

Kim McArthur, manager at Bield’s St Andrews Court Care Home, said: “Everyone really enjoyed their day on the railway as it was something very different for the residents to experience.

“For many it was a great opportunity to get out into the countryside, see places and reminisce about old times.

Kim added: “Our philosophy at Bield is about enriching the lives of people who use our services as much as we possibly can. So day trips or having people into the care home to perform, to recognise the value of events such as World Alzheimer’s Month, are all part of this.

“These events help to give our people something to look forward to and an opportunity to get out and about which we believe is very important.”
