Scottish rugby legend Gavin Hastings and former WBO super-featherweight champion Alex Arthur are just two of a number of past and present sports stars who have taken part in a charity sports quiz, raising a staggering over £20K for the Sick Kids Friends Foundation (SKFF).

The sporting legends – who also included Celtic captain Scott Brown, ex-Hearts and Hibs midfielder Michael Stewart and current Commonwealth judo champion Sarah Clark – participated in the Sick Kids Friends Foundation’s Ultimate Sports Quiz 2016, with all money raised supporting children in hospital and their families.

Now in its fifth year, the annual bash took place at Edinburgh’s The Ghillie Dhu, and attendees were offered the not-to-be-missed opportunity to bid to have one of the sporting celebrities join their team, with the winners – a team from Dundas Global Investors – choosing Sarah Clark as their eleventh teammate.

The sell-out evening also included a silent and live auction, as well as a raffle to further hike up the fundraising potential, with top prizes up for grabs including a Rafael Nadal signed tennis racket and two tickets to Portugal v Austria with flights and accommodation included, as well as a variety of other signed merchandise.

Long Term Support

The Sick Kids Friends Foundation supports the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and has committed to contribute £2.9million towards its move to a new, purpose-built home at Little France in 2017.

Frank Cusack, a long-term supporter of SKFF whose son, Adam, has previously used the hospital facilities, hosted the Ultimate Sports Quiz 2016.

Frank said: “This is the fifth year in a row that I’ve hosted the Sports Quiz and it was fantastic to have so many big sporting names give up their time for free to come along and support SKFF – we are very grateful to them for getting involved and helping us raise such a huge amount of money.

“This is a major year for the charity as they support the hospital’s move to its new home at little France, so it was great to have so many people join us to participate in the quiz and donate to this incredible cause.

“SKFF is a charity that is very close to my heart – the hospital saved Adam but SKFF saved our family.”

Pippa Johnston, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at SKFF, said: “This is a really exciting time for Edinburgh, with the much loved ‘Sick Kids’ hospital moving to a new home, and we’re contributing an additional £2.9million to ensure it will be a welcoming and friendly environment for kids.

“Many people don’t realise that the fun distractions, games and decor that can help a child feel much less frightened when they come into the hospital are funded by the SKFF, and we also fund grants for cutting edge enhancements and equipment – this will continue to be the case in our new home.

“We exist to ensure children and young people’s lives are less interrupted by illness and that they have a more positive hospital experience. So we are very thankful to everyone who took part in this year’s Ultimate Sports Quiz and contributed to our fundraising goal.”

Last year, the SKFF awarded grants to enhance nine areas of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, including the bereavement suite and A&E waiting rooms. There were 48 grants awarded for comforts which included toys, technology such as DVD players or iPads, arts & crafts and the Beads of Courage programme. In addition, almost 20 pieces of equipment to improve the care of children were funded.
