A new affordable housing development in St Andrews has welcomed its first-footer into his dream retirement home.

79-year-old retiree Anthony Deale was one of the first to set foot inside Bield’s newest development, Malory House.

A customer of 12 years, Anthony had previously lived at the housing providers nearby Marine Place before leaping at the chance to move into the new stylish and accessible development, which was officially launched in September.

Anthony originally moved to St Andrews to be closer to his daughter Emma who was studying in the area. His new home is now just a short drive away.

Daughter Emma McHale said: “We weren’t originally looking for a new home for my dad, but when we saw what Malory House had to offer, we thought it was a great opportunity.

“As an elderly man, a change like this can be rather daunting however when he saw the location as well as the quality of the build – it was a no brainer.

“The location offers the best of both worlds. It is really near the town centre, but far enough away to enjoy some quiet time and relaxation”.

The 30 apartments in Malory House are sought-after one and two-bedroom homes and – under a pioneering project – are being split 50-50 with priority cases from Fife Council’s housing waiting list.

Emma added: “My dad has been with Bield for many years now and he’s been very happy. I don’t think we would have considered such a big move if it hadn’t been for the team.

“Bield really went above and beyond to make sure the process was as smooth and easy as possible. From start to finish, they have been so helpful.

“The layout and accessibility of Malory House is much better suited to my dad’s needs and is full of like-minded people. I’d say the development is ideal for those who wish to retain their independence but want to leave the worries of maintenance and gardens to someone else.

“It’s great to see my dad thriving in his new home and the main thing is I know how safe he is in the development – the other positive is that he is only down the road from me!”

Constructed as part of Bield’s The Walled Gardens, Malory House is a prestigious development of 78 bespoke one and two-bedroom retirement apartments. Each of the spacious, high-spec homes boast light and airy rooms, stylish kitchens and bathrooms. Each flat has a video door entry system and secure front doors and double-glazed windows. Every flat can be accessed by a lift servicing all floors.

Dr Lynne Douglas, Chief Executive of Bield Housing & Care, said: “We’re delighted to hear how positive Anthony’s move has been.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for individuals in the area to secure a sought-after one and two-bedroom home – St Andrews truly is one of the finest places to live in Scotland.”

Bield is a registered charity dedicated to providing flexible housing solutions and support for older people.
