Sharon’s Hair Raising Charity Challenge

on behalf of Direct Savings
Sharon Martin was inspired to take on the daunting challenge in memory of Rita Fleming from Bents in Stoneyburn who tragically lost her battle with breast cancer on 28 February 2011 at the age of 63.
Sharon, who works as a call centre manager at Bathgate-based energy efficiency specialists Direct Savings, has also decided to try to reach her fundraising goal of £2,500 by holding a charity disco – with the head shave being the main attraction.
Sharon is now looking to appeal to any generous local businesses that could help with the catering and raffle prizes.
She said: “The help I’ve received from everyone at Direct Savings has been overwhelming. At first I was just going to get my hair shaved in the house but my boss Eileen convinced me to do it in front of all my friends, family and co-workers to raise as much money as possible for the charities.
“To be completely honest, I am terrified but I know my aunt would be proud and every penny we receive will go towards helping people who are suffering from cancer.
“I’ve also started to look into charities that use human hair to make wigs for people with cancer so people can benefit from what I’m doing even more.
“Luckily for me I can grow my hair back which many people can’t so I know what I’m doing is going to be well worth the effort. I just hope I meet my target and can help people going through what my aunt experienced as much as possible.”
Eileen and Ged Smith, directors at Direct Savings, have already donated £100 towards Sharon’s fundraising and are now helping to find more donations.
Eileen said: “What Sharon is doing is very inspirational and we’re all very proud to have her on the team.
“So far we’ve managed to help secure the venue and entertainment for free but we still are looking for help with raffle prizes and food. If any local businesses think they might be able to help, that would be fantastic.
“We really want to help Sharon raise as much money as possible for a cause she holds, like many others, close to her heart.”
If any businesses in the local area would like to help by donating either a raffle prize or money towards Sharon’s fundraising, please contact Eileen Smith on 07730 412255.
Members of the Direct Savings team and friends and family of Sharon will also be collecting any further donations on the night itself.
