SCOTLAND’S leading independent courier firm has strengthened its green credentials by sending drivers on a special fuel-efficient driving course.
Eagle Couriers has arranged for three members of its team to go on the Government-run Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED) course, in order to help further improve the firm’s environmentally-friendly work ethic.
The unique course involves a rigorous training schedule designed to make van and HGV drivers safer on the road and to improve the fuel efficiency of their driving. It is offered to companies who extensively use the country’s road network for their business.
Eagle Couriers has invested around £1000 to send its three members of staff on the course – a move it hopes will not only help promote environmentally-friendly driving and keep its staff safe on the road, but will also lead to long-term savings for the business.
Training boost for Scottish couriers
Jerry Stewart, one of Eagle Couriers’ directors, said: “This kind of training is very important for any business in our industry. Becoming more fuel efficient is not only good for the environment, but it is also beneficial to our bottom line, as we will ultimately be saving more money on fuel.
“However, it’s still a big investment to send our drivers on this course. Although the government has covered the cost for two of our members of staff to participate, we have still had to pay £150 for a third place. If you add up the other costs of having three drivers off the front line during the time that they are on this training course, we’re investing around £1000 in total.
“We have a responsibility to operate as efficiently and safely as possible in order to grow our business in the future. Ensuring our drivers continue to be trained to the highest standards will mean that our customers will receive the best possible service from an environmentally-friendly company.
“Our major clients include the Scottish Government, local health boards and numerous other public bodies, so we hope that our investment in fuel efficiency and safety will also cement our green credentials to these organisations.
Scottish PR success for courier firm
“We’re proud to be regarded as Scotland’s leading independent courier firm and have worked hard to maintain this reputation. Pursuing initiatives like the Safed course means that we are doing everything we can to sustain our position at the forefront of the courier industry for many years to come.”
The Safed course is the latest in a list of initiatives that Eagle Couriers has undertaken over the past year to maximise the safety and security of its expert drivers. Last year, the firm received approval from Government Car and Despatch Agency (GCDA) and Scotland Excel – earning the firm security clearance to make deliveries for the Government and other public bodies
Last winter, the firm also became the first courier company in Britain to trial specialist snow “socks” for their vehicles in order to keep drivers safe on icy or snow-filled roads that were unsuitable for bulkier tyre chains.
Eagle Couriers has almost 30 years’ experience in the courier industry and currently employs 100 staff between its bases in Glasgow, Bathgate and Edinburgh.
The firm has a 3500-strong client base ranging from blue chip firms such as the BBC and BT, public organisations including the NHS, and sole traders. As business-to-business experts, Eagle Couriers helps other firms operate more efficiently and profitably, by safely delivering on time everything from documents, medical samples and engine parts to sports footage, scripts and TV props.
