WHEN reading all the previous last week blog posts, I remember thinking why does everyone always say their month here went by so quickly? Now I understand.

To say this month has flown by would be an understatement. There has not been a single moment where I have been sat twiddling my thumbs, nor has there been a moment where I have been bored with a task. This is because the workload I have been given throughout the month has been so varied.

The tasks given to me from different team members has allowed me to deal with a wide array of sectors and clients, and the team place real trust in your abilities and look for ways to get you involved with work in areas that you are especially interested in.

I took a particular interest in social media, and how Holyrood PR looks for innovative strategies to embrace the growth of social media in communications.

As a result, I was challenged with a wide range of social media tasks such as finding new Scottish-based influencers for Clyde Munro Dental Group, and drafting captions for the Holyrood PR digital platforms. I also worked on social media planners for Eagle Couriers and property developer Dundas which involved creating imaginative graphics on Canva for their social media posts.

One of the extended projects I have been working on over the past four weeks was an analysis of national coverage for one of our clients. It was very insightful to be able to gain a greater understanding of local, regional, national and trade-specialist publications, a crucial element required for a role in public relations.

There were a number of team brainstorming sessions for a variety of clients which I took part in. It was a fascinating experience to learn how small ideas quickly form into great campaign strategies, and it challenged me utilise my creative skills to come up with innovative ideas of my own.

Having no previous experience in public relations, I was apprehensive that I would struggle to pick up skills that are second nature for the industry professionals here at Holyrood PR. However, the team has been so supportive and the feedback given to me on my writing and ideas has grown my confidence immensely.

The first revelation of how much progress I have made this month was when I was on LinkedIn doing the classic hunt for Junior PR Account Director roles. Usually it was disheartening to look at the job requirements section, which usually listed a range of skills and expertise I hadn’t even heard of. However, after a month here at Holyrood PR, I was amazed at how many requirements I could tick-off – from press releases and competitor analysis, to social media planning and so much more.

I have gained invaluable work experience with Holyrood PR and now feel confident to put myself forward for other PR internships and junior roles. I couldn’t recommend this placement more for undergraduates and graduates looking to gain some experience in the public relations industry.
