A TALENTED pupil from West Barns Primary School near Dunbar has seen her competition-winning mood board transformed into the bedroom of her dreams, thanks to a major home builder.

Run by the nearby CALA Homes (East) Castle Bay development, the competition saw P6 and P7 students at West Barns Primary School tasked with designing a mood board for a bedroom in the show home.

First place was given the opportunity to have their design made a reality by Carol Yates, an interior designer with 25 years’ experience – who briefed and then looked over all the work, along with staff at CALA.

The winning mood board, designed by 11-year-old Katie Kelly MacGregor, was inspired by the seaside – which is a mere five-minute walk from the luxury Dunbar housing development.

Speaking during her first visit to see the room in real life, Katie said: “I think it’s really cool – I didn’t think I was going to be getting a prize for my designs.

“It’s weird that so many people who are going to be buying a house and going to be seeing my room. I’ve been so excited to go and see it to see what it looks like.

“I really like the bed as it stands out with the driftwood and the net. I also like how the lights dangle down and the copper colour.”

Gill Whitford, Headteacher at the school, said: “It’s been a pleasure working with CALA Homes, because it’s given us an opportunity to link in with the development that’s happening right next to the school.

“We’ve had them in to do some safety talks and now we’ve had the opportunity to do some design work, the children are beginning to see where the skills they are learning in school can be applied in the wider working world.”

Carol Yates, owner of Carol Yates Design, said: “Katie’s was very creative and I loved her beach theme. She really managed to cover everything in an interior – which is what we were looking for.

“She had all the practical things, with a touch of creativity with this amazing bed.

“I think she was delighted with her win. She can definitely work with me in the future.”

Located in the picturesque village of Belhaven which sits to the west of the coastal town of Dunbar, Castle Bay offers four and five-bedroom detached homes within easy reach of the capital.

Speaking of the home builder’s involvement with the local community, Philip Hogg, Sales and Marketing Director at CALA Homes (East), said: “It is brilliant how well the kids at West Barns Primary responded to this creative task.

“At CALA Homes, we always strive to invest in the communities surrounding our developments, so it was natural for us to engage with such a great local school like West Barns Primary.

“The bedroom looks brilliant, so I congratulate Katie on her excellent mood board. This could be the start of a big career in design for her.”
