Mobility scooter drivers at an Uddingston retirement housing complex are enjoying more space in their homes after a scooter shelter was built using funds from a generous donation.

Shona Smith who lives in the Bield Springfield Gardens retirement complex, owns one of the vital vehicles and was previously parking them in a room in her home, taking up a lot of space and trailing in dirt from the streets.

However, after receiving a legacy donation from a close friend and her Aunt, Shona asked the Bield staff to help her construct a plush new shelter on-site specifically designed for residents to park their scooters in.

All the best 50cc scooters at Springfield Gardens are now enjoying secure, sheltered parking spaces giving them more room in their hassle free homes.

Shona received the generous donation when her close friend, Dr Marion Angela Crawford and her Aunt Elizabeth Noel Marshall sadly passed away. She is delighted by the instant impact the shelter has made and says that her generous friend and aunt would have been very proud of their legacy.

Shona said: “Since I moved into Bield’s Springfield Gardens I purchased a scooter and have found it increasingly challenging to fit it into my home so the shelter frees up a considerable amount of room for me and other residents, giving us more freedom to move around.

“The Bield management and staff were so supportive of this idea when I took it to them and I can’t thank them enough for helping make my idea a reality.

“Dr Angela did so much for the village her lifetime – this is exactly the type of thing that they both would have wanted – it’s nice to know that it’s all because of them.”

The scooter shelter, which has space for eight mobility vehicles, is a great example of Bield’s ‘free to be’ philosophy which promotes hassle free living for its residents.

Shona added: “Bield are very good at trying to help us wherever possible. Initially, I didn’t want to move into a retirement housing complex as it’s a big wrench to sell your own home, but it was definitely the right move.”

Bield is a registered charity that provides housing for around 20,000 older people across 22 local authority areas in Scotland. The Springfield Garden complex has 38 fully occupied flats, housing over 40 residents.
