A Perthshire businessman has ‘graduated’ from an elite course which aims to improve the skills of Scotland’s rural experts.

Mark Mitchell, Partner at Bell Ingram’s Rural Land Management division, visited the Scottish, Westminster and European Parliaments as well as attending a range of workshops as part of the Scottish Enterprise Rural Leadership Programme (SERLP).

The five-month programme is aimed at business managers and employees from rural businesses who have a desire to develop their leadership skills and grow their business.

Mark, who specialises in all aspects of estate and facilities management for both private and commercial clients, said the programme has been immensely rewarding and is looking forward to putting his newfound skills into practice.

Mark Mitchell said: “The workshops that we were involved with as part of the course were a great experience where I gained insights into myself and reinforced others.

“In particular, the opportunity to meet and quiz Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, and a large number of MPs and MEPs was full on but incredibly worthwhile at the same time.

“The varied background of the participants also meant that the range of events we attended were able to be scrutinised from perspectives I would not have previously considered, and the chance to meet new people and build friendships was an added benefit.”

To date, over 360 people have completed the SERLP, including farmers, vets, estate managers, tourism managers, and managers from processing and supply businesses.

The aim of the programme is to assist rural business leaders to create additional wealth through leading, team working, networking, influencing and by being ambitious. It does this by developing the capacity of individuals, building their confidence, widening their boundaries, building industry and parliamentary trust, providing an awareness of rural economic issues and introducing individuals to the wider rural leadership network.

Established 117 years ago, Bell Ingram has 130 professional staff across 11 UK offices including: farm, estate and forestry managers; chartered surveyors, architects, planners, and building surveyors; and tourism, GIS mapping, and renewable energy specialists.
