THE HISTORIC village of Roslin is to benefit from a £155,000 injection of funds for local school facilities as work gets underway at a hotly anticipated new residential development.

Respected housebuilder CALA Homes has started work on 79 new homes – ranging from two-bedroom cottage flats to four and five bedroom villas – at the Midlothian site, on land previously owned by The University of Edinburgh.

Located north of Penicuik Road on the western periphery of the village, the development was given the green light by a Midlothian Council.

Included in the plans is a £1.4 million contribution towards the provision of affordable homes, helping boost a broad spectrum of local housing supply.

Craig Lynes, Land Director with CALA Homes (East) said: “Roslin is an extremely desirable area but there has been very little development in the past few years to meet demand so we are delighted to be getting the site underway.

“The site will support the local economy, and has been carefully designed to incorporate local feedback to ensure that it becomes a natural extension to the village.”

“The development will deliver stronger pedestrian links from the village to Roslin Moat to the west and will also provide safe routes to the soon to be open newly constructed Roslin Primary School.

Initial work is set to start on site in mid-March, as CALA aims to have the first homes at the development completed as early as late autumn 2017.

The site, which has been identified for much-needed family housing in successive Midlothian Council Local Plans since 2008, represents an important element of the local authority’s vision for housing.

The initial application for Planning Permission in Principle was approved by local committee in 2013.

Craig added: “We have been lucky enough to work in Midlothian for many years and we remain committed to investing in the communities with whom we work.

“There will be major financial contributions to improve schools in the area and to deliver vital affordable housing in Midlothian.”

CALA Homes is headquartered in Scotland, employs more than 850 people and earned its reputation on the high quality of the homes it builds, which are sensitively designed to augment the areas in which they are located.

The result is homes that are highly sought after and which retain their value over decades, earning loyalty from owners, who often live in a series of CALA properties.
