Art of Dentistry fully approved to provide treatments still unavailable on NHS

While NHS dentists still face a range of restrictions on the treatments they can offer, Art of Dentistry in Prestwick faces no such limitations.

It is able to offer its full range of services, including the type of “aerosol generating procedures” which are currently unavailable to NHS patients, except in the most serious emergency cases, and only then at Urgent Dental Care Centres located throughout Scotland.

The move is possible because Art of Dentistry is one of just 29 private dental practices of its type regulated by Health Improvement Scotland (HIS), which has given the go-ahead for the reopening.

Founder Dr David Wiseman said: “As a team we could not be happier with this news. It is brilliant to be back in action and we expect our patients will be similarly delighted.

“It’s entirely possible we may even be seeing new patients coming to us, particularly those requiring the kind of treatments that are still not available via NHS dental practices.”

Art of Dentistry, part of Clyde Munro, Scotland’s biggest, independent dental group, has catered for thousands of private patients across Ayrshire since being established by Dr Wiseman in his home town of Prestwick in 2007.

It is the forefront of cosmetic dental treatments including implants, teeth straightening, veneers and dental makeovers. However, it also offers its patient routine check-ups, fillings, root canal treatments, crowns and bridges – some of which are still not available via NHS practices.

To meet HIS standards, Clyde Munro has taken extensive steps to ensure the practice has social distancing measures and enhanced PPE in place, with all patients following rigorous processes before and during visits to the surgery.

Dr Wiseman, added: “At Art of Dentistry we’ve always prided ourselves on offering the most advanced treatment technology. Now Clyde Munro has gone to the same great lengths to ensure our practice meets and exceeds even the most stringent hygiene standards.

“We have brought in apparatus to purify the air, as well as studying data from other countries on how dental practices have coped coming back to work. Our patients can be reassured that the standards they are already used to have now been taken even further.”

Dr Wiseman gained acclaim as one of the first dentists to endorse implantology in the 1980s. He achieved the highest level of award from the International Congress of Oral Implantology in 1993. Throughout his career he has been an advocate for leading edge techniques, treatments and technologies.

Clyde Munro’s Chief Executive, Jim Hall said: “We are delighted Art of Dentistry is open again for its patients. David and the team have worked incredibly hard to ensure it is as safe as possible for reopening and will following strict protocols.

“The practice is open to patients by appointment only and they will be presented with a QR code which they can self-scan themselves for their appointment. Each member of the team will also be wearing enhanced protective equipment.

“We will now keep a close eye on developments as we gradually move out of lockdown.”

Clyde Munro was founded by Mr Hall in 2015 with the acquisition of seven practices. Since then, it has enjoyed rapid growth through acquisition and has plans to continue expanding, offering both NHS and private treatments.

It now comprises 40 practices across Scotland, with more than 200 dentists, 350 staff and 300,000 patients. The group’s ambition is to become Scotland’s “local dentist”, operating an expanding network of family dentists across Scotland, with each devoted to providing the best dental care, while reflecting the needs and character of its community.
