An East Ayrshire football club is to enjoy improved facilities for all – with the help of a generous grant from Banks Community Fund.

THE £5,500 donation has been gratefully received as the football season gets into full-swing and the resident Glenafton Athletic teams, based in New Cumnock, look to regularly use the clubhouse and function rooms.

Adding toilets to this function room will enable users of the room to meet without the need to visit the facilities of one of the clubs other venues.

David Kerr, Vice Chair of Glenafton Community Development Group, said: “It has been great finally upgrading the function room to provide facilities for everyone using it.

“The building here is used by a number of community groups and, of course, the football teams to meet and provide hospitality for visitors. Previously you would have to make a trip to one of the other parts of the clubhouse which, when you have 30 or 40 people meeting, is not ideal.”

The New Cumnock club, which consists of three teams – a junior, boys and over-35s – plays host to many of the local areas clubs and community groups looking for a place to convene.

Loch Park, the club’s grounds and clubhouse, provides the venue for a diverse range of groups.

Lewis Stokes, community relations manager at the Banks Group, said: “We are pleased to be playing a part in improving the facilities of a much used and core part of the community.

“Hopefully, this addition will build on the already great venue at Loch Park.”

The Banks Community Fund is a fund set up by family-owned The Banks Group, to support eligible community groups, voluntary organisations and environmental projects.

Should planning consent be granted by the Scottish Government, the Lethans wind farm would see 22 turbines installed in East Ayshire and the 74.8MW project will be capable of powering an estimated 40,600 homes – or Cumnock and New Cumnock combined.

As part of an ongoing period of consultation in 2015, Banks Renewables received 420 letters of support from the public, with just one letter of objection.

The majority of the turbines are to be installed in the valley to best shield them from view.

The Lethans Wind Farm would contribute approximately £8 million over the 25 year lifetime of the project towards community initiatives, in addition to a £250,000 investment towards improving access to the site with cycling and walking facilities.
