Online news publication All Media Scotland, has featured the story of a boutique hotel which has been inundated with generous offers, after coverage concerning how it located a relic newspaper was gained.
Management at the Fraser Suites Edinburgh hotel, tracked down the rare copy of the Edinburgh Courant newspaper, returing it to its original home which was once the heart of Scotland’s Fellet Street.
After the story of the hotel’s discovery was published in the media, a number of private collectors contacted the hotel looking to offer further copies.
Yet staff at the hotel say that one copy is more than enough to mark the site place in Scottish history.
Heather Gilchrist, regional general manager at Fraser’s Hospitality quotes in the article: “It’s great that we have been able to spark such interest in what is an important piece of Edinburgh history”
And while the numerous call and emails from sellers across the golbe are great, she adds: “We’ve got our unique edition and I’m very happy with it. The fact is we are a hotel and not library, so i’ve suggested to all the callers that they approach the National Library of Scotland.
“It would be the perfect venue to allow the general public to gain access to these wonderful pieces of both Edinburgh’s and the newspaper’s history. It would be fantastic if these important relics found their way back to Scotland and we had played a part of that”
The edition of the newspaper dating 17th March 1759 has been framed and can be viewed by customers in the hotel’s main recpetion area.
