LOCAL children and young people have brought pantomime cheer back to an East Lothian community – while paying tribute to a tragic young school leaver who loved to take part.
The panto was a much-loved annual event in North Berwick, but had not been staged since 2012 after the previous production team retired.
However, the production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – helped with sponsorship from CALA Homes (East) – was relaunched over the weekend at North Berwick High School and was dedicated to Stuart Cormack, a former pupil and panto regular, who passed away in the summer.
The pantomime was in aid of St Columba’s Hospice in Stuart’s memory, and CALA’s support ensured that as many of the local community as possible had the chance to enjoy the relaxed, festive evening as well as contribute to a very worthy cause.
Caroline Vevers, Director and Producer of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, said: “It was fantastic to be able to return pantomime to North Berwick this year, and especially wonderful to be able to do it as a tribute to Stuart.
“There are quite a lot of costs involved in the staging of a panto, as you have to consider everything from rehearsals, to lighting and sound, to costumes for all the performers, so we’re very grateful to CALA for its valuable contribution.
“It’s great to see a company like CALA really help the local community in the area where it builds and we’d like to thank them for their kindness and generosity.”
Stuart was only 22 when he died of cancer, just five weeks after being diagnosed. After leaving NBHS, he continued his love of acting at his university drama society.
In addition to a monetary donation, the upmarket homebuilder contributed four Molton Brown packages to a raffle which Caroline also held to raise further funds for St Columba’s Hospice.
Philip Hogg, Sales and Marketing Director at CALA Homes (East), said: “We’re very proud to support this community initiative, particularly as it is raising money for such a worthwhile cause in Stuart’s memory.
“With our developments, we aim to bring people together and create a real sense of neighbourliness and this is exactly what is at the heart of the North Berwick pantomime.
“We look forward to having the opportunity to sponsor many more local events in the near future.”
CALA is committed to investing in the communities where it develops. CALA’s latest North Berwick development, Law Gardens, offers a wide selection of four & five bedroom detached family homes, set at the foot of the breathtaking North Berwick Law.
The showhomes at Law Gardens are open daily, 11am – 5.30pm. Viewings can be booked through CALA on 01324 442 605 or visit https://www.cala.co.uk/homes-for-sale/east-of-scotland/law-gardens to find out more and register interest.
