The future of the Dunfermline City Half Marathon – a popular warm-up event for the Edinburgh Marathon – has been secured for the next three years after a sponsorship deal was struck with leading estate agents and solicitors Hunters-psm, a division of The PSM Law Group.

Michael Maloco, founding partner and vice chief executive of The PSM Law Group, said: “The company is delighted to play a part in underpinning such a major event in both the Fife and Dunfermline sporting and social calendar.

“This is particularly pleasing on two counts – our company is Fife-based and we have long believed in the value of supporting the local community, and for me personally as I am a Dunfermline man, born and bred.”

More than 1000 runners are expected to take part in the race, which has also secured National Championship status and will host this year’s Scottish Half Marathon Championships.

The half marathon – re-introduced by John Martindale in 2002 after a two year absence from the Scottish road running calendar – will be held this year on Sunday May 30 at 11.30am, just two weeks before the Edinburgh Marathon, with the start and finish in Dunfermline’s picturesque Pittencrieff Park.  There will also be a popular ‘Family Fun Run’ on half marathon day, organised in association with  ‘jogscotland’.

Race Director Dr Martindale said: “Securing the Scottish Half Marathon Championships for 2004 is a great boost.  I’m absolutely delighted that Scottish Athletics has placed their trust in us to deliver.

“It will allow us to raise the event profile further as we look to attract more and more runners to Dunfermline.  It is also no accident that our half marathon is being staged just before the Edinburgh Marathon, providing ideal preparation for runners taking part in the capital event.

“We also have a joint promotion in place with the ‘Auld Toun 10K’ (7.30pm, Wednesday 12 May) and a new race entry system, both major steps forward in race administration and development.”

Scottish running legend Liz McColgan, chair of Scottish Athletics, said she hoped the move to hold the half marathon championships in Dunfermline will see more runners than ever participating in the race.

She said: “I would like to congratulate Dunfermline on being awarded this year’s Scottish Half-Marathon Championships.  Even though it is a relatively young event, the organisers have already proved they can host a top class event and this is a just reward for their efforts.

“With the accompanying ‘fun run’, it is a great opportunity for runners of all ages and abilities to put on their trainers and get involved.  I expect May 30 to be an excellent day for not only Dunfermline, but for Scottish Athletics as a whole.”
