A MAJOR developer is “plugging in” to the surging demand for electric vehicles (EVs) by creating the most comprehensive charging provision of any development built to date in Scotland.

All 84 apartments at The Crescent at Donaldson’s, by CALA Homes (East), will be served by an EV fast charger, with the infrastructure built into the underground parking at the premium Edinburgh development.

The Crescent is home to a selection of unique apartments ranging from £950,000 to £1,925,000 located in the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, within 18 acres of grounds that make up the largest new shared garden to be created in the Scottish capital.

The provision is a result of a tie-up with Scotland’s leading EV charge point installers, Jorro Ltd, with The Crescent marking its largest developer project to date.

David Pickles, Managing Director with Jorro, said: “It is brilliant for a developer to have the foresight to include this level of EV provision in its plans.

“While many buyers may not yet have EVs or plug-in hybrids, it is inevitable that a majority will do in the not-too-distant future, as range increases and costs fall.

“The great thing about The Crescent is that the chargers are there, in place and ready to go. All buyers need to do is add the relevant plug unit, due to different car brands choosing varying solutions. Any costs therefore will be negligible.”

In a nod to the forward-thinking and energy-conscious designs of The Crescent, elite electric car manufacturer Tesla drove two of its premium vehicles into the grounds last month to test the facilities.

Owners at The Crescent will have access to an EO Genius charging unit, fully connected to the mains, with a dummy unit in place until the final set up is made. It is the first time an apartment development of this scale in Scotland has featured a comprehensive EV infrastructure.

The underground parking at the development is a result of a desire to minimise the impact of cars on the famed setting. A major excavation project in itself, its creation witnessed around 36,000m3 of earth transported to restore a former quarry in Ratho.

Philip Hogg, Sales and Marketing Director for CALA Homes (East), said: “The entire project is centred on providing buyers with something truly aspirational, yet at the same time, entirely practical.

“This extends to the underground parking – which is extensive with a purpose of minimising any vehicle visibility, creating a secluded retreat in the heart of the city.

“It is highly likely that the vast majority of our owners and future owners at The Crescent will be requiring EV charging within the next few years – so we’re delighted to be able to offer them such comprehensive provision.

“It also greatly reduces the barriers to entry that prevent many people taking up ownership of these much more environmentally-friendly cars.”

Designed by Richard Murphy OBE, the architecture of The Crescent has been directly influenced by Edinburgh’s famous Georgian crescents.

This creates a feel of a secluded private estate just minutes from Haymarket station, and a mile from the heart of Princes Street.

A bold and sweeping arc of 84 enhanced height, glass-fronted apartments, The Crescent is nestled to the private rear of Edinburgh’s iconic Donaldson’s estate.

Just a mile west of Princes Street, the collection of apartments in this 18-acre estate offer buyers an idyllic rural escape whilst still being in the heart of the capital.

Haymarket train station is also just on the doorstep, as well as plenty of bus links both into and out of Edinburgh.

Two show apartments are available to view daily. Visit https://www.cala.co.uk/the-crescent or call 0131 516 2667 for more information.
