Final home sold at successful CALA Homes development

THE final home has been sold at a successful development that has created a vibrant collection of homes on land previously part of Broomieknowe Golf Club.

Eagle’s Green near Bonnyrigg represented a key project in the region for CALA Homes (East) – with work on the development starting in 2016.

The 56-home development has subsequently been an overwhelming success with buyers – meeting the needs of a wide spectrum of the local housing market.

Included in the development are 14 affordable homes for social rent, built by CALA and delivered by locally-headquartered Melville Housing Association and built to be “tenure-blind”, meaning they blend seamlessly with the wider development.

At an upbeat visit late last year to open the affordable homes, the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning remarked on the quality of the homes.

He said: “This is the first affordable housing project completed by CALA Homes for Melville and shows the value of partnership working between CALA, The Scottish Government and Melville Housing Association.”

CALA’s investment in Midlothian directly resulted in the launch of the Midlothian CALA Homes Community Bursary in 2018 – and its return in 2019, resulting in a combined £20,000 distributed to 26 good causes in the region.

In addition to planning payments, CALA has also struck a close relationship with Lasswade Primary School, facilitating a school trip to the site, donating £2000 towards revamping the school’s outdoor space as well as providing a wooden sand pit using materials from the site.

In addition, purchasing the land (on a former practice area) has helped to secure the future of Broomieknowe Gof Club with funds invested back into the club as part of a wider strategy including new clubhouse and course improvements.

George Clark current captain at the club, said:  We have been delighted to have worked with CALA through this exciting time for both the houses at Eagle’s Green and Broomieknowe golf club.

“On the back of the sale of land to CALA we have been able to press ahead with planning permission of a new clubhouse, something we hope will benefit the area as well as to the wider area – as we look to retain our role as a leading golf club in Midlothian.

“With approximately 800 members, playing and social, the Club is firmly at the heart of the community and its success is felt throughout the Club and across the wider area.”

“This has all culminated in a locally-approved development that has successfully met the needs of the local community.”
