Proof that PR works – and the success is sweeter when it’s this close to home

Pub owner’s positive PR headlines raise profile of charity to battle wasting disease which claimed his dad

Successful pub and restaurant PR for pub owner Calum Mackinnon

THE GREATEST challenge with PR is convincing sceptics that it works.

So what better way to show successful PR in action than a genuine example from my own personal life?

Not only is it all for a good cause, but just to add that extra stamp of authenticity it’s also a piece of PR success by (say it quietly) a direct business rival.

My other half flagged up a two page article from the Evening News (you can read the full article by clicking here).

On the strength of this coverage she not only visited the pub and introduced herself to the owner -she’s already been back a couple of times with friends in tow.

In other words, as a direct result of this PR, Amicus Apple has won a number of news customers, who are also likely to provide repeat business.

Any time in the near futures when my other half is heading out for cocktails with the girls, I can be pretty sure Amicus Apple will be on the “must visit” list and she’ll be recommending it to anyone who’ll listen

Ever helpful, the missus also suggested that Holyrood PR should be approaching Amicus Apple boss Calum Mackinnon with an offer to handle his media relations.

Alas, I’m afraid I had to disappoint the good lady wife. We’d already pitched to the eminently likeable Mackinnon, only to be gently let down. After his initial interest, he chose to go elsewhere.

It’s impossible to rankle at his decision. Those who have met him say he is a genuine and grounded guy.

Since my own view is that all good, professional PR is beneficial to those of us in the sector, I’m delighted to flag up this success by Calum’s chosen PR advisers, particularly because it is for such a good cause.

Indeed, the whole reason the original article caught the eye of ‘er indoors is because her best friend also lost her father to Motor Neurone Disease and later this year will be running the London Marathon to raise funds.

Jenny Baerlocher (nee Leitch) saw her fit and healthy father, who played golf and ran marathons, struck down and killed by the disease in little over three years.

Jenny and Dad

In April she will proudly take up the first every place on the London Marathon for the Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association – not only to raise funds in her dad’s memory but to realise a long-held ambition and follow in his marathon running footsteps.

Anybody interested in doing their bit to help can fight this terrible, wasting disease can either:

Sponsor Jenny and find out more about by visiting her dedicated fundraising web page – by clicking here (already more than £3000 pledged towards the £26,000 target).

Or pop into Amicus Apple and enjoying one of the special fundraising Ronnie Mackinnon Cocktails – then purchase tickets for the March 20 and 21 Edinburgh Charity Fashion Show, which is also supporting MND charities.
