Government’s cladding bill leaves door open for Scottish PR success

Procurement firm achieves newsjacking masterclass | Scottish PR

A TRANSFORMATIVE bill aimed at giving power to Scottish ministers to tackle unsafe cladding was endorsed by the country’s leading procurement body.

The Scottish Procurement Alliance (SPA) leapt at the opportunity to back the new Housing Cladding Remediation Bill, stating the decision would increase safety standards across public housing and buildings.

By reacting quickly to the story, the procurement body was able to voice its opinion on a subject matter that takes great precedence to number of their clients, as well as weighing in current policy driven news.

The highlights included:

SPA was aware of when the cladding bill was going to be announced, and used this foresight and expertise to prepare a media release reacting to the bill being passed through parliament.

To support the story, SPA contacted one of its suppliers which had benefited from a recent framework the procurement body awarded. The case study, A.C. Whyte – who are an expert in cladding – provided a reactionary quote to the announcement alongside SPA.

Managing Director of A.C. Whyte, Jennifer Phin, contributed to the piece ensuring not one, but two different voices (including SPA’s MD Lesley Anderson) were able to react to the recent cladding bill.

The procurement body issued the story to national and local media, as well as housing and construction outlets whom regularly run stories about SPA.

Timing was of the essence for this piece. A swift response to the cladding bill was needed to follow up with the original story of being announced while it was still firmly in the news agenda; waiting even a week to get a response out to the cladding bill would have reduced the chances of the article getting pick up in the press.

Ultimately, the proactive approach to drafting a media release and seeking third party comment cemented SPA as one of the leading voices around building safety standards, and reinforced its key messages in reaction to the new bill.
