Fundraisers Brave the Cold for homelessness and earn warm PR

OVER 50 people joined forces and spent a night on the streets of Edinburgh last night (November 8) to help raise funds to support young homeless people across Edinburgh and the Lothians thanks to PR in Scotland.

The event, organised by The Rock Trust, had photographers out in droves and landed a slot in the Edinburgh Evening News.

Volunteers spent the night sleeping outside the Sheraton Hotel in Festival Square to raise awareness of homelessness, a problem which affects thousands of youths in Scotland.

Money raised from the event will fund Nightstop, an emergency accommodation project for young people.

Kathleen O’Mahony, Fundraising and Events Co-ordinator for The Rock Trust, said: “Thank you to everyone who took part last night, it was a fantastic turnout and despite the cold weather a very enjoyable evening.

“In Scotland authorities received 20,000 homeless applications from young people aged between 16 and 24.  The Rock Trust  needs to raise awareness of this fact so that we can continue to provide housing and support services to young people.

“This includes providing those in danger of becoming homeless, and those who have been homeless, with effective support networks, access to information and access to education and job opportunities.”

PR in Scotland for local charity

The Annual Rock Trust Sleep Out it set to take place in Edinburgh’s festival square to raise awareness of young homeless people in the capital.

Volunteers including Edinburgh Central MSP, Marco Biagi will raise sponsorship for sleeping rough on city pavements for one night only.

Organisations from across the country are working with the Rock Trust in partnership with the event, and each will be holding their own Sleepout event on the same night, raising awareness of the issues nationwide.

Marco Biagi, SNP MSP for Edinburgh Central, said: “The Rock Trust have been providing an invaluable service to Edinburgh’s homeless people for over 20 years. I am proud to help them highlight the continuing adversity faced by young people who find themselves living on the street.”

Money raised from the event will be used to fund charities which support the city’s young homeless people on a nightly basis, in particular national charity Nightstop which provides emergency accommodation services to young people and has been in operation for 20 years.

The Rock Trust works across Edinburgh and The Lothians with young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. It provides advice, education and support to those most vulnerable in order to enable them to make a positive transition to adulthood and avoid the risks that accompanies homelessness.
