Graduate Niamh Coffey talks about her four-week placement with award-winning Edinburgh PR agency

By Niamh Coffey

I BEGAN my internship with a strong awareness that even with my master’s degree in public relations, I would be in for a real eye-opening experience of what it’s like to work in a top PR agency. Five months after finishing university, I was back in front of my laptop ready to get stuck in, and excited to start learning what real PR work in the real world was all about.

Holyrood PR is an award-winning Edinburgh PR agency, and the quality of work produced, and expected is high. There is no better place to start your journey into the world of public relations! The team are dedicated, talented, and the support from them has been incredible. It’s a great feeling to know that everybody around you wants you to succeed, learn, and get the most out of your time.

Testament to the team’s commitment to supporting each other and keeping up the exceptional standard of work they produce, is the fact that despite their busy schedules, everybody went above and beyond to make sure I knew what I was doing, and to give me in-depth feedback and advice.

I was entrusted with a variety of projects for a wide range of clients; getting the chance to work on press releases, social media content, media coverage posts, and media lists. Every piece of work evokes a different style of writing depending on its purpose and the client, so it was a really great way to boost my writing skills. I also enhanced my knowledge and understanding of digital PR; learning about SEOs, how to use keywords effectively, and how to monitor SEO success.

For me, this internship was as much about building confidence in myself in the workplace as it was about learning how to do public relations at an award-winning agency like Holyrood PR. I found myself stepping out of my comfort zone regularly. I put myself forward to join in with calls, demonstrations, and projects that would help my learning and development.

Importantly, I got to find out what it means to be Holyrood PR – turning the everyday into something that makes us proud! A wonderful way to encapsulate the dedication and passion of the team, and the heart and soul of the profession. Perhaps one to put into practice throughout life.

If you decide to take on this jam-packed internship, you’ll be working with some of the most talented, kind, and supportive people. If you join with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a desire to get involved; you’ll fit right in and push the boundaries of possibility with this incredible Scottish PR team.
