Quayside Summer House - PR AgencyA member of staff who helped create a summer house and sweet shop for residents at a Glasgow care home has been nominated for this year’s Scottish Care – National Care Home Awards.

Alex Ross, of Bupa’s Quayside Care Home, has been shortlisted in the Ancillary & Support Staff category for his daily dedication to Quayside’s residents and to improving the environment of the home and gardens.

One of the key reasons for Alex’s nomination was his extensive involvement in the construction of an outside summer house area which aims to provide a social environment for the home’s residents.

In addition, he was highly involved in the construction of a sweet shop inside the care home, on which he worked with residents to design ideas and then make them into a reality by transforming a previously disused corridor end into the eye-catching confectioner. The innovative idea helps residents to recognise nostalgic aspects of their past and share memories and stories from their childhood.

Alex said: “It came as a big surprise to be nominated for the award but it’s a fantastic feeling to be recognised for my work.

“Everything I do is for the residents and all my efforts are driven by the desire to create as positive an environment as possible for them.

“The satisfaction I gain from my job and the extremely positive feedback that I receive from the residents and staff is all the thanks I need, but to have been nominated for a Scottish Care Award is a real honour.”

Carolyn McConville, Home Manager at Bupa’s Quayside Care Home, said: “Alex’s nomination is in recognition of the incredible job he does, day in day out, and his constant commitment to the residents of Quayside.

“He has a wonderful rapport with everyone at the home, and includes the residents at every possible stage of his work. He is truly committed to giving them not just a home that they enjoy living in, but one that they have helped shape.

“We all have our fingers crossed for the big night – but, either way, Alex is a star in our eyes.”

The Scottish Care Home Awards recognise excellence and pay tribute to the people and organisations that look to make a difference to the lives of those in their care.

Kirsty Dace, Managing Director, Scotland and the North, Bupa Care Services, said: “This nomination acknowledges the often unseen – but vital role – that members of many care home teams play in helping people to live fulfilled and happy lives.

“Everyone here at Bupa is delighted that Alex’s dedication has been recognised and we all wish him the very best on the awards night.”

The Scottish Care – National Care Home Awards will be held at the Glasgow Hilton on the Friday 18th November 2016.

Scotland’s care homes deliver high quality complex care to some of Scotland’s most vulnerable older people.  The Scottish Care – National Care Home Awards Care Homes is the showpiece opportunity to highlight and celebrate innovation and excellence across the sector.
