Greg James for BBC Radio 1The latest jockey to set foot on Musselburgh Racecourse is tipped to give others a run for their money as it’s announced Greg James (from BBC Radio 1) is to be this year’s VIP host at one of the venue’s most prestigious events.

Greg James (from BBC Radio 1), who recently completed five triathlons in five days in five cities and raised a mammoth £1,011,718 for BBC Sport Relief will join attendees at The Edinburgh Cup Raceday sponsored by Edinburgh Gin. The event is widely recognised as one of the biggest meetings in Scotland’s racing calendar, attracting thousands of horse racing enthusiasts to the venue.

The popular BBC Radio 1 DJ will host the famous after racing party in the Stage Marquee at the five star attraction just a few miles from Edinburgh city centre.

Greg James (from BBC Radio 1) said: “I’m delighted to be hosting the after party at the Edinburgh Cup. The event combines a selection of my personal interests including horse racing and DJing, so I’m really looking forward to getting involved and enjoying the day with everyone.

“Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities and I’ve heard a lot about Musselburgh Racecourse so I’m thrilled to have been invited.”

Sarah Montgomery, Senior Operations and Commercial Manager at Musselburgh Racecourse, echoes the excitement of Greg and is delighted he has confirmed his attendance.

Sarah said: “As guests go, Greg James (from BBC Radio 1) is a real hot favourite. Not only is he one of the best-known radio DJ’s in Britain, but he has the perfect sporting credentials to fully appreciate the quality racing at the event.

“He is always having a good time, which we are sure will make him hugely popular with the thousands of attendees.

“We are delighted to officially confirm he will be attending and are very much looking forward to welcoming him for a fantastic day of racing and socialising.”

Fast-growing drink brand Edinburgh Gin has also agreed a £10,000 deal to claim the headline sponsor slot at the meeting following on from the success of last year’s race day – which saw racegoers enjoy more than 14,000 measures of gin.

Sarah added: “The combination of our VIP guest, first class racing and Edinburgh Gin’s reputation for quality will ensure the day is a complete success. Whatever way you look at this, it is a fantastic partnership all round – not least for our racegoers who between them polished off more than 500 bottles in total during last year’s raceday.

“Edinburgh is the gin capital of the UK and Edinburgh Gin is a flagbearer for this thriving Scottish sector, but it is also premium brand which our racegoers love. We have heard our guest DJ is a gin lover as well so we are sure he will have a great time.”

Musselburgh Racecourse is firmly established as one of the UK’s most stylish racecourses, hosting 28 flat and jumps meetings each year. Already popular with racing enthusiasts, it is increasingly becoming a draw for both families and corporate clients.

As part of the year-long celebration of the historic racecourse’s 200th anniversary, there will also be a special Bi-Centenary Celebration Raceday on Friday, July 8th.
