AS HER TIME AT AN EDINBURGH PR AGENCY DRAWS TO A CLOSE, GEORGIE HARDIE REFLECTS ON HER FOUR-WEEK INTERNSHIP

FOUR weeks have sailed by and I can’t believe how much I’ve learnt about the exciting, fast-paced world of PR.

Holyrood PR has shown me the ropes of what the world of public relations has to offer. I’m delighted to say that I’ve gained a new set of skills and broadened my knowledge of the industry – which I hope will stand me in good stead for the future.

HIGHLIGHTS

As I mentioned in my first week blog I was lucky enough to meet a 95-year-old partially blind painter called Margaret who lives at Bield’s Fife Court, Bothwell. Not only were her stories highly entertaining, but also very inspiring.

Margaret was extremely kind, offering us many cups of tea whilst she revealed to us she bakes up to 20 cakes a day! She could also use her iPad and iPhone at ease as she showed us some of her photos. Did I mention she was 95?!

After the interview, Margaret insisted we took a cake home each and a painting from her impressive 200+ collection. Meeting Margaret was a truly special day.

During week three I was tasked with calling a 69-year-old man called Peter Dewar for a press release on National Friendship Day. Calling a stranger to ask them questions about their life can be nerve-wracking, but thankfully Peter was very friendly and happy to talk.

He shared his story of how he lost his wife and was feeling lonely, so he decided to join a walking group – supported by Paths for All. A once tough time for Peter was changed when he met a new friend called Ray Mackie. Hearing about how Ray supported him was really touching and I felt lucky to be given the chance to write about it.

In my final week I was tasked with researching drones to highlight just how beneficial they can be for companies. I even got the chance to go out with Seb, the Videographer, and see first-hand how to operate a drone. Seb even let me have a go at flying his ‘baby’.

TO CONCLUDE

I couldn’t think of a better place to have tried my first internship. The team at Holyrood PR have been so kind and encouraging and I’m really grateful for the experience they’ve given me.

As I start my 2^nd year at university this September, I will look forward to applying all I’ve learnt this past month, along with the excitement of what lies ahead for my future career.
