Nerves and Newspapers: My First Week as a PR Intern

PR Students First Ever Internship off to a Flying Start with Holyrood PR

Scottish PR Intern Danielle Bryson reflects on her first week

By Danielle Bryson

THE thought of having to secure an internship as part of my fourth year at Queen Margaret University, genuinely made me feel sick each time I thought about it.

When it came to my day of interviews, I thought for sure that no agency would want such an inexperienced fourth year student like myself when they are bound to receive so many talented applications. However, much to my surprise, after meeting Katie and Cat I received an email a few days later inviting me to intern with Holyrood PR, which I replied to almost immediately.

As March arrived, I navigated my way to Holyrood PR’s office and, of course, arrived far too early for my 9am start, so I sat in my car wishing the nerves away. After I finally plucked up the courage to walk into the office, I was greeted happily, shown around and introduced to each member of the team.

From the word go, I was tasked with many jobs from undertaking newspaper sweeps each morning, writing up Eagle Courier’s social media planner for the coming week to being reintroduced to photoshop after my quick fling with it during my college days.

Like many interns, I too battled the dreaded phone phobia during my first week in the office. Answering the phone was something I would normally love doing at my other job, but somehow it became a stomach-churning experience in the setting of a hard at work office.

Thankfully, just like you would expect, this internship isn’t just making teas and coffees. Since I’m still not quite over my fear of the office’s fancy boiling water tap, I have seriously neglected my turn to do a tea round – sorry guys!

Overall, I have enjoyed my first week here at Holyrood PR and thankfully have not felt like a pain to anyone that I have asked for help. Everyone is very welcoming and ready to brief me on jobs each day.

I’m looking forward to the coming weeks which I am sure will fly by just like my first week did, and to being able to further my experience and knowledge in the PR field.
