Mooring the Internship

My reflections of my time aboard HMS Holyrood

SO IT’S now been almost four weeks since I boarded my own journey (internship) – and with each passing day I’ve become more and more comfortable with my everyday tasks.

I’ve gained confidence writing press releases and blog posts, know my way around a WordPress website and can even navigate the maze that is the company’s methodical document drive.

By working with the crew here I’ve learned some new skills in my last week such as how to issue press releases to news desks, how to upload image galleries and more about the ways in which Holyrood PR tells the stories of its clients.

My writing’s in the papers!

Some of the stories that I’d unearthed in my first weeks have now gained coverage in newspapers, magazines and online – that’s been particularly rewarding.

It’s great to be able to have copies of published articles that I’ve written to take away with me so that I have something to show for the work that I’ve produced here. I imagine that this sort of evidence will come in really handy for job interviews if I continue to look for work in PR and get asked the fateful question: “What experience do you have?”

It’s also been nice to be able to tell the people and families who the articles are about of their media coverage and feel their excitement and appreciation.

In my last week of work here I’ve helped to produce case studies on people who have benefited from the Sick Kids Friends Foundation.

Being able to see into the day-to-day workings of a PR agency has been eye-opening. I now have a much better idea about what life in the industry is like and how different agencies can really differ in the types of work that they do for their clients.

Water my pieces of advice?

I’d encourage future interns to make to-do lists. They’re essential for keeping on top of larger tasks like meeting a deadline for a press release while not forgetting about the quicker jobs, such as calling a news desk to follow up on a story – or chasing people up for photos to accompany a story.

Making to-do lists also really helps time management, you don’t want to miss a deadline and watch that ship sail…

The opportunity to do an internship here has been nothing but beneficial and with the confidence and skills that it has given me, this catfish is now ready to swim off into the big sea.
