Making New Space for Edinburgh Curry Lovers

Space and LancersWorkplace design specialist Space Solutions has reaffirmed its credentials for innovation and diversity by carrying out a major refurbishment for one of Edinburgh’s oldest and best-loved Indian restaurants.

The firm has completed a full redesign of popular Edinburgh institution Lancers, as part of a move to re-establish the premises as one of the Scotland’s premier Indian restaurants.

Under the project, the Stockbridge restaurant – which is one of only 30 venues in the UK to be featured in the Good Curry Guide – has been completely transformed with new designer furniture and a new bar area.

The refurbishment includes a new black and white colour scheme featuring military fabrics that are intended to represent the uniforms of the famous Bengal Lancers regiment that the restaurant is named after.

Carol Leitch, Senior Designer at Space Solutions, said: “The restaurant already had a military theme based around the Bengal Lancers, but this was only ever reflected in publicity material and signage. The interior itself always had a slight Colonial feel to it, but had become tired and dated.

“The main aim of the new design was to continue this long standing military theme with a new contemporary space. The ceilings are higher and the décor fairly neutral, which lets some key features such as the large mural to one of the walls in the dining space, take centre stage. The theme of the mural is based around a traditional artist impression of a typical Bengal Lancers scene, a theme which has also been incorporated into various pieces of artwork throughout the restaurant.

“Bold striped fabrics, rich textile effect wall coverings and decorative lighting complete the look.”

Badrol Hussain, the owner of Lancers, added: “We wanted to ensure that the restaurant was as comfortable as possible to dine in, so we’re delighted with the result of this refurbishment. Space Solutions understood exactly what we wanted to achieve, and the new interior that they created for the restaurant is fantastic.

“We have worked in the past with the Space Solutions and we returned to them for this project because they take time to understand our business and deliver designs that are truly bespoke and meet all our requirements.

“I’m sure that all of our customers will be as impressed as we are with the new-look Lancers.”

A New Direction Gives Great PR Scotland

The Lancers project represents a new direction for Space Solutions away from its traditional workplace solutions services, and the firm is setting its sights on further expansion within the Scottish bar and restaurant sector in the future.

Gary McGurk, Business Manager at Space Solutions, said: “While we have an excellent reputation for completing major design and refurbishment projects in offices across Scotland, we have always had the skills and experience to work in other sectors.

“The principles of good design are exactly the same for a restaurant or bar, so we were able to use our extensive depth and breadth of expertise to create a cost-effective and vibrant design that maximises the space and accentuates its best features – as well as providing excellent premises for staff and customers.

“Lancers holds an important place in Edinburgh’s restaurant scene, so we knew we had to create something that acknowledged this but still gave the restaurant a stylish new look.

“We have worked previously with the team at Lancers so it is particularly pleasing that they have come back to us because they recognised the fresh, can-do approach we bring to all our clients.

“Following the success of this project, we’re now looking forward to carrying out further work within the Scottish leisure industry in the future.”
