The rare malt is available at the hotel for limited amount of time
A LUXURY Edinburgh hotel is serving up an impressive reputation as a go-to destination for whisky lovers in search of rare malts.
Nira Caledonia has taken stock of a prized collection of 24 bottles of 12-year-old Glenrothes single malt whisky – the latest addition to a series of rare whiskies it has been able to acquire.
Nira Caledonia, a 28-bedroom luxury boutique hotel in Edinburgh’s New Town, has forged a partnership with Adelphi Selection to provide guests with the opportunity to buy and sample exclusive and highly-collectable limited runs of Scotland’s spirit.
It means guests can buy full bottles of malts that are not available anywhere else in the world – a feature which is seeing guests and whisky aficionados regularly return to be sure they can add to their collection.
The whisky is not only unfiltered and bottled at cask strength, but comes from one single cask which makes this particular whisky unique and exceptionally rare.
Gary Harding, Restaurant Manager at Nira Caledonia, said: “Our whisky collection from Adelphi is increasingly becoming more popular with our regular visitors and whisky lovers in search of a truly rare malt.
“One guest has bought four bottles from each of the whiskies supplied to us by Adelphi for the last five years.
“We’re delighted to have this ongoing relationship with Adelphi, and to provide an exclusive whisky sampled nowhere else in the world only serves to strengthen our appeal to whisky enthusiasts.”
The latest whisky hails from the Glenrothes Distillery in the village of Rothes, Speyside, which has been producing single malt whisky since 1879. It is labelled featuring the hotel’s branding as well as information on the source, age and proof. The 70cl bottle comes in at £89, while a 35ml tipple from the bar is £10.50.
Distilled in 2007 and bottled from its distinct Cask No 10237, the single malt is golden in colour and evokes a fruity fragrance inspired by Granny Smith apples, fresh fruit salad and orange zest – with a hint of almond pastry and homemade apple strudel.
The tasting notes show the 58.8% whisky exudes a luxurious creamy texture with hints of almonds and hazelnuts before finishing with vanilla custard.
The Glenrothes will be the fourth whisky to be sold by Nira Caledonia under the Adelphi partnership. The last selection, 24 bottles of an eight-year-old Caol Ila from Islay, all sold out.
Rare malts from Ardmore and Glen Gairoch distilleries are among the other exclusive bottles Adelphi has supplied to Nira Caledonia.
Adelphi is headquartered near Dunfermline and exists to identify the very small number of casks that have produced the ultimate whiskies. With a panel lead by world authority on Scotch whisky and Master of the Quaich, Charles MacLean, Adelphi accepts just 4% that it is offered.
It also only deals with a select group of businesses which includes celebrity chef Tom Kitchin’s group of companies and Scotland’s only Michelin two star restaurant, Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles.
Nira Caledonia is also providing guests the opportunity to try flights of whiskies to sample the bar’s wide-ranging selection.
The hotel not only stocks Scottish whiskies, but also offers guests a range of whiskies from around the world. The whisky flights range from £20 – £35 depending on the choice visitors make.
Nira Caledonia is part of Shanti Hospitality, a hotel and leisure company with a focus on building and developing exceptional assets and brands. There are three other properties in the Nira portfolio; Nira Alpina in St Moritz, Shanti Maurice in Mauritius and Oniro Mykonos in Greece.
Anyone looking to experience the poignant history and cosmopolitan culture of Edinburgh – in style – can book Nira’s Winter Warmer package from now until the end of February.
