Lulu – nestling under Tigerlily in Edinburgh’s George Street – is the latest offering from Montpeliers, the group which has spent 10 years setting the style bar and club benchmarks that everyone else follows.

Lulu launches on Wednesday (October 4) with a stellar line-up of Rainer Truby (Truby Trio, Compost Records) Germany’s Gilles Peterson, with support from Gareth Sommerville, Hobbes and Blond Flash.

Lulu’s enthusiasm for its music policy coupled with a sound system that’s second to none, should hopefully lead to an enviable reputation and a passionate following. Along with Scotland’s most highly regarded and critically acclaimed team of residents, Lulu will regularly welcome guest DJs from all over Europe.

The key is a happy collision between New York disco and quality music in a comfortable, welcoming space with the best possible bar staff around. A sound responsive disco light dance floor, capacity pegged at 300, large brass shimmer screens and red silk walls give this venue its unique, kitsch and cool atmosphere.

Lulu strives to play music for a more discerning listener and provides an alternative to everything else on George Street and beyond.  There won’t be any tired disco house or funky floor-fillers by numbers.

Those thrill-seekers with a desire to dance the night away in the most sumptuous of surroundings will see this decadent basement come alive with a party-starting mix of rare groove, funk and soul classics from 60s/70s, jive, exotica, swing, new wave, alternative disco, electro-pop, chart, indie-dance crossover, bootleg soul, electronica, proto-house, Latin beats, new funk, disco, classic hip hop, 80s soul weekender anthems, re-edits, bootlegs, 80s electro, Balearic holiday club classics.

The result is an exciting fusion of musical genres matching the mingling of Edinburgh’s social sets on the dance floor.

The musical offering is the vision of two of Edinburgh’s club scene stalwarts Fraser Heeps, best known for launching and managing Caberet Voltaire, now manager of Assembly Bar, and Eric Roberts, DJ, promoter and agent extraordinaire.  The duo have created a DJ line up that is edgy yet accessible.

Eric said: “Our experienced DJs are capable of pushing the boundaries without losing their crowd.  We believe that the elite clientele expected to be frequenting Lulu will have an understanding of Europe’s most stylish cities.  They will be well travelled and have experience of the bars and clubs in these alluring destinations.  We have tailored a music programme to suit their tastes.

You can see how Lulu will be matching the cool of some of London’s hottest nightspots.”
