Leading Care Provider Launches Breaks for Carers Service

Bield Housing And Care Press releases

Linlithgow PalaceA flagship short breaks service has been launched offering holiday breaks for service users with dementia from anywhere in Scotland.

Bield, Scotland’s leading provider of housing and care, is offering short breaks to people at its purpose built facility that can support up to 4 people with dementia.

The new service will take referrals from anywhere in the country, giving families the peace of mind that their holidays no longer have to exclude relatives who need care.

It has been launched at the charity’s service at West Port in Linlithgow – an historic Scottish tourist destination close to the country’s two main cities.

One advantage of the service is that families going on holiday near the care home could take their loved one with them so they are not left behind in their local authority area.

Bield can offer anything from single-night stays to several weeks, with 24-hour assistance with personal care, medication and social activities.

Facilities include a private bedroom and ensuite facilities and service users can choose to socialise with others in the attractive lounge.

At a very reasonable cost of £580.11 per week, this includes all meals and snacks. A guest flat is available for family or carers who may want to still be close by during the short break, at £8.50 a night.

Carol Robertson, Resource Manager at Bield’s West Port Care Home, Linlithgow said:  “Short breaks enable carers to have a break safe in the knowledge that their relative or friend is being well looked after.

“This service is unique because we are now offering short breaks to dementia patients no matter where they live.

“We provide an excellent home-from home service here, with highly trained staff on duty 24 hours a day to assist with personal care, medication and social activities.

“We are flexible with bookings offering anything from a single night to several weeks’

“Our guests have the exclusive use of a bedroom with en-suite facilities. An attractive lounge and dining room are available for all guests to use.”

If carers wish to stay on site, they can take advantage of a family apartment for just £8.50 a night.

Brian Logan, Bield’s Chief Executive said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this pioneering respite scheme to carers and those they care for across the country.

“At Bield we are always on the lookout for ways to help improve care services so this is a great example of our doing so.

“Everything we do is founded on our ‘Free to Be’ philosophy meaning that people in care can take control of their lives whilst being given to necessary support to do so.

“Never before has a service like this been offered.”

Bield – a registered charity – has grown from humble beginnings, starting out with one housing development in Bo’ness to become a major provider of a wide range of housing and services for around 20,000 older people across 22 local authority areas.
