My groundbreaking month with an Edinburgh PR agency

INTERN REFLECTS ON THE HIGHLIGHTS OF HER MONTH WITH AN EDINBURGH PR AGENCY

By Katie McNaughton

The time has come for me to close the door on my time here at Holyrood PR. In the fast-paced world of PR, four weeks really do fly past in the blink of an eye. In this relatively short period, however, I have gained an abundance of experience and skills that cannot be gained in a classroom.

The team have all gone to a lot of effort to make sure I felt welcome and that I was involved in the many projects going on at all times. Everybody is extremely supportive and they are always willing to help you out if you have any questions. That being said, nobody has babied me or been overbearing; giving me a level of autonomy that I’ve never experienced before on a placement.

Working with such a wide range of clients has broadened my admittedly narrow horizons. Having previously only worked in the creative industries, gaining experience with clients from the legal, property and public sectors will no doubt open up a few more doors for me.

During my time here I have gained valuable insight into how an agency operates, helping to compile lists of media outlets and client hours. I have also been tasked with many interesting research tasks for new business opportunities as well as existing clients. I’ve been given ample opportunities to sharpen up my writing skills, being tasked with press releases, blog posts and entries for Holyrood PR’s website.

The month I have spent here, however, has shown me that there is far more to PR than simply writing press release upon press release. On several occasions, I’ve been invited to step out from behind my desk and get involved in fun events. One of the highlights of the month was joining the videography team on a shoot in Loch Lomond where I showed off my impressive camera skills (placing a GoPro on a log) and interviewed a variety of people for the video.

Come Monday I will be starting my second internship of the summer with an agency in London. So, as I trade Leith for Leicester Square, and prepare to throw myself back to the lions in the fashion PR world, I feel much steadier on my feet. Thanks to my month with Holyrood PR I know that I have ideas to bring to the table and the experience to help me see them through. The lessons I have learnt in one month here will surely guide me for years to come.

I cannot speak highly enough about the internship programme here. If you’re looking for a month packed full of experience and personal growth, then this is the place for you. If you see me sobbing hysterically as I sprint down Regent Street with 99 bags and a tray of coffee, then let it be a lesson: there aren’t many places like Holyrood PR.
