A stunning Scottish island which inspired Sir Walter Scott’s poem, ‘The Lord of the Isles’, is on the market for offers over £4.25 million.

The Isle of Ulva offers potential buyers the unique opportunity to own their own island which provides the perfect mix of peace and privacy.

Easily accessible by boat from the nearby Isle of Mull, the incredible island has attracted a number of famous faces over the years, from explorer David Livingstone to renowned children’s author Beatrix Potter.

Most famous of all perhaps was Sir Walter Scott, who was inspired by the island’s amazing scenery when he penned his 1815 poem ‘The Lord of the Isles’.

Ulva is approximately 7.5 miles long and 2.5 miles wide and its principle residence, Ulva House, is a beautiful grade B listed property built in 1950.

For their money, the new island owners will also get in addition to a truly beautify landscape a Telford designed church, a small restaurant and tea room as well as nine other properties, ranging from traditional bothies to a former sporting lodge.

The island also boasts three anchorages, two private moorings and the breathtaking views make Ulva one of the finest privately owned islands in Europe.

Mark Mitchell, from Bell Ingram’s head of estate Agency, said: “It’s not every day that the chance arises to purchase your very own island, particularly one that combines so well all the facets of conservation, sport, farming and recreation.”

“The incredible Isle of Ulva is truly one of the most stunning islands in northern Europe and not only offers buyers the chance to live in incredible properties but also in such beautiful surroundings, with stunning views at every turn.

“It offers the best of both worlds, as it has the remote feel one might desire from their own private island, having no tarmac roads, but also being relatively easily accessible by both sea and air.”

“New owners will also be buying into a terrific area of history, with a host of famous names such as Sir Walter Scott, David Livingstone and Beatrix Potter all having taken inspiration from its surroundings.”

Beatrix Potter visited her family on the Isle of Ulva. Her cousin, Caroline, was married to the Laird of Ulva and her famous novel, the ‘Tale of Mr Tod’ is dedicated to Caroline’s son, with a message inside the book reading: “For Francis William of Ulva – someday!”

It is said that the famed explorer David Livingstone visited his grandparents on the island.

The Isle of Ulva is found off the west coast of the Isle of Mull and enjoys the visually exceptional backdrop you would expect from this part of the world.

It is thought there are less than 20 inhabitants currently living on the Isle of Ulva.
