ALL 150 staff at one of Edinburgh’s largest hospitality organisations will enjoy a January “Christmas party” – after bosses took the bold decision to shut one of the city’s largest hotel and conference venues for a night.

Surgeons Quarter, which operates Ten Hill Place, is throwing a belated festive party for all of its teams across its conferencing, catering, events and hotel business.

Its busy 129-room hotel will be closing its doors to customers for one day and night on 05 January to enable the full complement to attend the festive celebrations, where costs will be covered.

Scott Mitchell, Managing Director of Surgeons Quarter, which drives revenue for its parent organisation, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), said: “The majority of our staff work shifts which change on a weekly basis.

“By shutting down the entire business once a year, everyone can come together to celebrate what we have achieved as a team. It gives us a chance to show everyone that they are equally appreciated.

“Everyone enjoys themselves – we always have a large turnout and it’s great for people from different departments who usually work opposite shifts to spend time together.

“This year there will be the opportunity for staff to win cash prizes at the party, and we will match the value of these prizes with a donation to Bowel Cancer UK.

“Christmas is the time for giving after all, and giving to our charity partner while rewarding our hard working members of staff is a way of truly getting into the spirit of the season.”

The party is a Deal or No Deal-themed event – with Surgeons Quarter matching the amount won by staff in a donation to its charity partner, Bowel Cancer UK. There will also be a quiz before the large team fill nearby Royal Mile institution, The World’s End, for a buffet.

Erin Brown, Marketing Executive, said: “Closing the hotel for one day makes us feel very appreciated and rewarded as we all get to celebrate together, rather than some of the team being scheduled to work.

“It’s such a unique thing in the hospitality industry – so we are really grateful and looking forward to the celebration.”

Surgeons Quarter is aiming to raise £50,000 for Bowel Cancer UK’s Improving Surgery, Saving Lives campaign.

Surgeons Quarter promotes, sells and manages all commercial activities held within the RCSEd campus. All profits support the charitable aims of the College which are education, assessment and advancement in surgical standards worldwide.
