The haulage industry will converge on Hampden Park later this month to learn methods to cope with dishonest staff committing damaging criminal activity.
The ‘Driving Out! Insider Threat’ conference will feature key speakers from the industry as well as police and academics – and will be opened by Derek Mackay MSP, the Minister for Transport and the Islands.
Taking place on November 25th at Hampden Park, the event will be hosted by Distribution Industry Partnership Scotland (DIPS), an industry specific branch of the Scottish Business Resilience Centre (SBRC) and is aimed at the haulage industry and any organisation directly linked to it.
A key feature of the day will be the practical workshop activities which will follow the morning talks from industry and police experts.
Minister for Transport and the Islands, Derek Mackay MSP, said: “This conference brings together vital knowledge and discussion on the key issues facing an industry that quite literally drives Scotland.
“The good work of DIPS and the SBRC in highlighting the danger of insider threat means that individuals and companies throughout the haulage industry can access insight from influential figures on the problem.
“I especially applaud the model of a morning conference followed by a workshop – it will yield many practical benefits and opportunities for delegates to develop their own methods for tackling rogue staff.
“The topic of the insider threat was chosen by the industry members themselves and it is encouraging that they are choosing to tackle this issue head on.
“Cyber-attacks, although just one aspect of the insider threat, is a growing and worrying threat. And by eliminating the dishonest behaviour of a minority of individuals within firms we can look to reduce the risk of harm to businesses in the haulage sector.”
Further speakers include Denis Fischbacher-Smith, Glasgow University’s Chair in Risk and Resilience and D.I Chris Lewis of Police Scotland, as well as some industry and public sector figures.
Tickets and exhibiting opportunities are now available to DIPS members as well as non-members.
Director of the SBRC, Mandy Haeburn-Little, said: “Insider Threat is something that can be particularly damaging to the haulage industry, as it requires complex logistical systems.
“For instance, Human trafficking, a problem the sector has been dealing with for many years, is something which can be facilitated by dishonest employees on the inside – with huge risks to the reputation and future operations of the business.
“The threat from inside is not exclusively malicious and employee negligence can so often be the determining factor for a whole host of damaging situations, such as a firm being defrauded by a cyber attack.
“There are simple ways to limit damage from the insider threat and I am particularly looking forward to the workshops following the morning talks – which will give these firms the confidence to tackle the issue in a practical and effective manner.”
Based at Police Scotland and the Scottish Government’s business resilience delivery arm, the SBRC, DIPS works with its members to protect their products and cargoes by developing crime prevention measures, exchanging information on relevant security and regulatory issues, sharing best practice and circulating intelligence.
Members can get advice, guidance and practical assistance on all aspects of business crime prevention and receive regular crime alerts. DIPS members also work in partnership with the Scottish Government and the police to identify and target criminal activity affecting their businesses.
