Hydro Scheme Helps Power £6000 Community Chest

Cala Homes Press releases

A JOINT project between the Rotary Club of Currie and Balerno and the Balerno Village Trust has raised £6000 – which will be distributed to local good causes in the coming weeks.

The Rotary Club was able to contribute £3000 towards the “Community Chest” with the total further boosted by a £2,000 donation by housebuilder CALA Homes (East).

The Trust was able to contribute £1000 in funding as a direct result of the hydro scheme at the nearby Harlaw Reservoir – which launched in 2015 and generates around 260,000kWh (units) of green energy per year, enough for 100 homes, while generating funds for the community.

Applicants have been encouraged from causes in Currie, Balerno, Juniper Green and Ratho and the successful recipients could receive up to £500.

Martin Petty, a director with Balerno Village Trust, said: “It is a joy to finally be able to harness funds from the hydro scheme and contribute towards some amazing groups doing vital work in our communities.”

A panel comprising Rotary Club and BVT representatives will now formally announce recipients for the first half of the funding before the end of January, with the other half to be decided in six months time. It is hoped that the Community Chest can become an annual fund to benefit local causes.

Roy Stirrat from the Rotary Club of Currie and Balerno, said: “Our club comprises members from these individual communities and we are delighted to be able to further support groups carrying out important work every day, often under the radar, improving the lives of local people.”

Philip Hogg, Sales and Marketing Director with CALA Homes (East), said: “It is testament to these two groups that they have been able to work together to raise such an impressive sum of money which we were delighted to contribute to.

“Likewise, as a developer we fully appreciate that we are a very real presence in these areas, with two new developments recently launching in Balerno plus active developments in both Currie and Ratho.

“We very much wish to ensure that we are a positive part of these communities – and are pleased to be able to assist with this great initiative.”
