A HOSPITALITY organisation which puts its profits towards advancing surgical care and improving patient outcomes worldwide has revealed its most successful November in history after welcoming more than 2,300 delegates to four large conferences over the month.

Surgeons Quarter, the commercial arm of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RSCEd), had a record-breaking month with the four back-to-back conferences which helped them to achieve revenues 20% above the projected monthly budget.

In addition, nearly 4,000 delegates attended 60 events which were held across Surgeons Quarter’s four venues during the month.

Together, the conferences, the British Society of Thoracic Imaging Annual Meeting, the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery (BSCOS) Conference, International Conference on Integrative Salmonid Biology and the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA) Education Congress – injected £952,775 into Edinburgh’s wider economy.

All profits generated from conferences, as well as those made by Surgeons Quarter’s Ten Hill Place Hotel, are put towards the College’s charitable aims of improving patient outcome and advancing surgical standards worldwide.

Scott Mitchell, Managing Director of Surgeons Quarter, commented, “Last month’s successes are indicative of a record-breaking year for us.

“Seeing more and more people support Surgeons Quarter’s mission through events, Café 1505 and Ten Hill Place is both rewarding and inspiring.”

Surgeons Quarter’s four events venues, Café 1505 and Ten Hill Place Hotel accumulated a total turnover of £5.9 million in 2018, with a projected increase in turnover of more than 22% in 2019.

Ten Hill Place, Edinburgh’s largest independent four-star hotel, also enjoyed occupancy rates of 85% in November.

The Old Town-based establishment underwent significant expansion last year following record occupancy numbers, seeing its capacity increase from 77 to 129 bedrooms.

Surgeons Quarter has built a name for itself in the hospitality and meetings sector and is now a go-to destination for conferences, weddings and celebrations.

The organisation has received several industry accolades since its inception, including Conference Hotel of the Year, Eco Hotel of the Year, a Gold Award in Green Tourism and a Silver Four Star Rating from the AA.

Surgeons Quarter promotes, sells and manages all commercial activities held within the RCSEd campus. All profits support the charitable aims of the College which are education, assessment and advancement in surgical standards worldwide.
