IS CHEZZA LOSING HER TOUCH? (Laura)

FHM have announced their shortlist of the world’s sexiest women and there was a bit of a shock for Cheryl Cole who took the top spot the previous 2 years as this year she has been bumped to 12th place. Model beauty and Transformers 3 star Rose Huntington Whiteley took the top spot this year followed by Rhianna and Katy Perry in second and third place. Even little known but beautiful Brooklyn Decker Andy Roddick’s wife managed to make the top 10 ahead of Ms Cole. So what is it that has changed the male population’s opinion of the nation’s former sweetheart? Could it be that we have finally come to the end of our Chezza obsession? Her recent perception in the media as fame hungry and desperate to get back with her love rat ex footballer – certainly hasn’t helped her in the hot stakes that’s for sure.

GREAT SCOTS! (Andrea)

Two Scottish artists have made the shortlist for this year’s Turner Prize. Glasgow-based Karla Black and Martin Boyce will compete against two other artists for the coveted award. This article which shows the artists and their work in pictures, explains that Black is renowned for using everyday materials such as cellophane and lipstick, and Boyce’s sculptures bring an element of the outdoors into art galleries. The winner – who will be announced on December 5 – receives £25,000 and Black has been picked as the early favourite to pick up the prize.

TESCO’S WESTERN ADVENTURE IS NOT SO FRESH & EASY (Adrian)

Supermarket giant Tesco may be a multi-billion franchise and a household name in the UK, but it seems that its attempts to break into the United States have fallen rather flat. While profits across the group have risen 12% over the past year, America remains the only blot on Tesco’s copybook with a deficit of £186 million. And it’s not like they’re not trying to make the venture successful either.  The corporation currently runs 175 stores across California, Nevada and Arizona under the name “Fresh & Easy” – but despite applying the same business strategy that has worked so well in the UK, American shoppers just aren’t going for it.

This BBC article examines why Tesco can’t get a strong foothold in the States and why it could be fighting a losing battle against US supermarket chains like Wal-Mart and Safeway.

WOMEN’S PRISON IS ONE MAN’S PARK (Pamela)

A scene straight from a comedy sketch became a reality for one German man this week when the unnamed 24-year-old managed to get locked in a women’s prison after taking a wrong turn when trying to get to his local park.  The man unknowingly walked through an open gate at the facility when it was undergoing remedial work.  On realising his mistake he turned to leave, only to find the gate locked.  After screaming for two whole hours the town’s mayor who happened to be passing by overheard his cries for help and alerted the authorities.  Agreeably many red-blooded males would love the thought of being in this situation but i guess the reality is much less appealing than the dream.

NOTICING FELLOW EMPLOYEES ARE GETTING SICK IN THE OFFICE? (Aimee)

Maybe your building is sick! Sounds mental but sick building syndrome (SBS) is a real condition featuring in the United States Environmental Protection Agency and National Institute of Environmental Health Science and summarised in Wikipedia.  Unfortunately the scientific explanation of SBS isn’t as exciting as it sounds so get any images of a slumped over multi-storey building with a hot water bottle and mug of beechams to hand.  The explanation is very straightforward as it can be caused by a multitude of flaws in areas such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.  In a majority of cases, those afflicted will be relieved soon after they leave the particular room or building.
